Re: Bruce, hope this helps + sidetrack

2015-01-24 by Bruce Cassidy

Hi Lars - thank you so much for your kind comments.
I remember ordering the panels and hanging out with the guys - I had just left BST and was living near San Francisco at the time.
Since I am an electrical engineer’s son Serge put me to work soldering during the couple of days that I hung out there.
The guys were very cool - and the modules, of course, stellar.

That BST Live in LA gig was recorded and I didn’t know that till years later.
I remember those days fondly for the music but not for the business side.
very best to you and thank you for the original costs - not that I intend to sell them for that…

Hi Bruce!

I have a catalog from the early 80's when I ordered a panel to be hooked up to my Lyricon Wind Driver. Probably same time you got yours. The guys at Serge mentioned your name, and you being a Steiner EVI player.
Judging from the photos, this seems to be your setup. I include prices from that period, with the hope you'll have an easier time assessing today's worth. What I add here - with the PEF excluded - fills a space of 14" out of 16" possible. If I missed something, please let me know.

ADP Adapter 17.00
NTO New Timbral Oscillator 275.00
PCO Precision VCO 175.00
VCM VC Wave Multipliers 230.00
MIX2 Dual 3-Input Audio Mixer 100.00 (in catalog buttons at left, jacks at right)
VCFS Variable Slope Filter 165.00
EQ Resonant Equalizer 220.00
PEF Pitch & Envelope Follower 590.00
PWB Power Supply in Small Chassis Box 100.00
POM Pomona Molded Cables (10) 25.00
POML Long Pomona Molded Cables (10) 27.00
P/R Panel/Rack 25.00
BOX Chassis Box 15.00
ROX Rack Mountable Chassis Box 25.00

Can't help sliding a bit into this nostalgical sidetrack.......
Surprised to see your name here. Today's list members probably have little idea we're dealing with a Luminary here! I saw you playing with the Canadian Blood, Sweat and Tears in the 1980 LA Downtown Street Festival. I had seen them a few times in Sweden 5-10 years earlier, but this was different. With no letdown of earlier versions with guys like Randy Brecker, Lew Soloff, etc, this BS&T-rare horn setup, (tp,flh,EVI + ss,as + ts,bars) was so much smoother and tight. Combined with a jazzier-bluesy leaning, more to the point. Moving so easily and still with such great dynamics. Your compositions-arranging obviously had a lot to do with it. Of course David Clayton-Thomas, but also very strong soloists like you and Earl Seymour on ts, bars (RIP!). I never forget the precise ping-ponging horns in your "Agitato". Previously only heard Zappa doing that sort of stuff.
The fact that I had to walk back half the distance Downtown - Venice Beach didn't matter at all....... List members: Get the "Nuclear Blues" record, and you'll know what I'm talking about.
Bruce, you were in South Africa, but now back in Canada, it seems. Hope you're still active.

All Best!
Lars
