Firstly, activity can't be created with rules. If people don't want
to/don't have time to post their tricks here, they would only go to
the minimum effort required to follow the rules, and not do their
best. If you want more non-sales related activity, 1) ask interesting
questions 2) share YOUR tricks 3) invite more people to the list.
Secondly, the nature of a mailing list is instantaneous communication.
It's primary means of communcation is e-mail messages. Thus it lends
itself well to things that are only relevant in the now, such as sales
related talk. Websites, blogs and forums (despite being based on post
time in the latter two cases) create permanent information points
which (through their primary mechanism, web access) you can access the
information easily at any point in time. Yes there's an archive, but I
think people feel that if they write elaborate tutorial posts on a
mailing list, it will be seen by the current bulk of members, only to
end up in the archive and be forgotten.
A mailing list works well for sales posts, quick questions and similar
things. Deal with it.
... although a way to boost useful activity might be to start a blog,
or better yet, a wiki, in parallel with the list and offer to post
tricks people are sharing there. I can help with the hosting and
technical side of things.
