a VCA but you can use them to make an interestingly compromised VCA.
Actually if you look at synth history they were only used here and
there for the past 40 years outside of Buchla. Korg's PS series
triple resonant filter comes to mind. Before people started cloning
low pass gates a couple years ago I can only think of Wiard making a
lot of use of them during the last decade, and Grant Richter freely
admits Buchla was an influence on his designs.
Certainly Serge was influenced by Buchla too, though not the extent
he would clone and copy. It's interesting that early Serge was very
centered around creative and varied use of voltage controlled slews
and did not separate control and Audio as Buchla still does
Oh, and maybe I'm wrong but doesn't the 227e have 4 non-vactrol VCAs?
