A Totally Knobular Experience

2001-04-12 by matt wilson

greetings friends!

AFAIK, STS has always used harry davies knobs. i've personally had a bit of a love/hate
relationship with the little dudes over the years...sometimes i've felt like i'm driving a 4x4
with little teeny tires (or tyres for our European members), and i'm a big fat guy with big
fat fingers so there have been times it would have been nice to be able to use just a finger to
manipulate that knob....but with the davies, its tough. very tough. OTOH, thats why we get so
much mileage per panel inch (whats with all the car metaphors?)

hence, i've always wanted to upgrade my frequency knobs (osc, filter, and dual clock, freq
shifter, quad vco) to something bigger in buchla fashion; these knobs, in my experience, get
a lot of useage, and they don't have + and - graphics that would be obscured by a bigger
knob taking up the geography. so i've been looking, and finally today at a local (san diego)
electronics shop i found the exact knobs i've been imagining, which are very close to the knobs
i've seen on some older serges:

yes, they cover the panel text. however, they feel great. its now easy to adjust with just a finger as
opposed having to use the thumb. and, something i've never noticed before under these circumstances:
the bigger knob makes the pot feel "looser" b/c less energy is required to turn it.....go figure!

the knobs were labeled:

raytheon
control knob
TS70-2WL-2
84-02

$.89 each at willy's electronics 619 477 2119. they were in a surplus type box.

i hope this is relevant to some listmembers.

matt
