RE: Programming Sounds--What the hell am I doin g wrong?

1999-10-06 by Verschut, Ricardo

Hai,

Good question...what are you doing wrong? I've always found the JP8 a very
easy synth to program on, as well as 'on-the-fly' as pre-defined. The layout
of the patch panel works great when programming intuitively. Everything is
visible at one glimpse. So, indeed, what could you be doing wrong?
Experience with digital machines (as the ESQ1) should already have tought
you a lot about synthesis in general, so I don't think it is necessary for
you to start some kind of course...

Are you sure your machine is 100% functional? E.g. do both the VCOs work?
Have you tested this (by changing the pitch of VCO 2 and listening how it
detunes)?

Hint: If you're looking for 'fat' sounds with a lot of bass-tones, throw the
HPF slider all the way down (= off). Playing around with the other knobs
should get you some fine results within half an hour!

Let us know what your findings are.

Cheers,
RVe

That's probably your problem...you're trying to get the JP-8 to sound like
the JP-4, which it doesn't. The arpeggiated sounds on Rio were done on a
JP-4.

RE: Programming Sounds--What the hell am I doin g wrong?

1999-10-08 by Philip

Ricardo,

Thanks for the tips. I am familiar w/ how the HPF
makes it sound thinner and the basic layout of the
voice. I think that I have been spoiled by the glossy,
internal f/x on a lot of newer synths. The sounds I
was shooting for were similar to the ones used by Nick
Rhodes (Duran Duran) created and used on "Rio." I have
fattened up quite a few sounds by detuning them.
Thanks again,

Philip

Rod,

On the actual song, "Rio" it is the JP-4 on the
arpeggiated parts, but the JP-8 is all over the album
according to earlier interviews w/ Nick Rhodes.
Thanks,

P

Re: Programming Sounds--What the hell am I doin g wrong?

Yes....but I thought perhaps the sounds you were trying to recreate were the
ones the JP-4 made. It is a different beast than the 6 and 8. I have a
JP-4,6, and 8...and I hear a lot of JP-4 sounds on the album...

Rod,

Thanks for the info. Do you have any specific
programming tricks or tips for creating unique synth
textures or spacy pads on the JP-8?
Thanks,
