hi there,
well like i said i got my jupiter 8 yesterday and i've been fiddling with it
quite a bit, the Bb5 key is suddenly working again (which doesnt mean its
fixed, rather it can fail again at any given time probably when its most
unconvenient) but i've got a question.
is it me or is the jup8 not all its said to be. now dont get me wrong i
bought it cheap and was planning to sell it to make a buck to put in my
"cs-80 savings account", i didnt expect anything in particular but after
cheking the internet and seeing al the hype i got hyped myself too. anywyz,
i love the strings, cross mod is cool too and it can make some huge sounds
too, good enough.
but i cant seem to produce a decent lead, and when im programming i seem to
run into the same sounds pretty often even though im trying all kinds of
different modulations.
what am i doing wrong.?? is the jup8 limited to a certain spectrum or am i
beeing a dork, i know my way around a z1 pretty ok, so i dont think i lack
imagination when it comes down to trying new ways of making noise. any
ideas ?

try approximating one of your previously existing decent leads on the JP8;
perhaps there are certain techniques you are used to from your own synths
that you've yet to try on the 8.

Also, so you can hear what kinds of lead the 8 is capable of, try digging up

a Devo tune called "Theme from 'Doctor Detroit'". This was a dumb 80s flick

w/Dan Ackroyd and Howard Hesseman. There's a lead line that sounds a lot
like a lap steel guitar which is reputedly Mark Mothersbough twiddling that
left hand controller section. Never mind these italics, I don't know how
that happened. Also, most of Devo's NEW TRADITIONALISTS was done on JP8 and

Moog Source, so there's some other (admittedly dated) points of reference.

I don't think you are imagining what you are noticing.
The jp8 doesn't cover every sound all that well, and
I actually find myself using the jp6 a bit more.
"Lead" probably means different things to different
people. . . but I do notice that for monophonic parts,
many monosynths in general seem to do a little better
than the jp8.

These may be empty suggestions but keeping the
resonance low, using the 12dB filter, using unison
with a very good analogue chorus, and using tube
saturation bring out some of the 8's strengths. I
find the juptier 8's strength doesn't really lie in
its flexibility, but in the overall character of its
sounds, which you may or may not like.

I'd have thought the Upe's envelopes were a bit slow for leads...it's forte
has always been pads....IMHO anyway.....if you want a decent polysynth that
does good leads (especially if you stack the voices) get a Cheetah MS6......

The closing credits promised a "Doctor Detroit II: The Wrath of Mom." I wish

they had filmed it, Doctor Detroit was one of those great dumb movies. Even
Fran Drescher (The Nanny- yech!) was funny in it.
