this is interesting. i've long thought a jupiter would be a welcome
addition to my household and always kind of assumed that if you had a
jupiter 8, you didn't really need any of the others (except for the fact the
6 has built in midi). all you jupiter owners, just how different are the 4,
6 and 8?

Yes, I'd say that without a doubt the synth that had
the BIGGEST influence on the mid 80's sound would be
the DX7, even though no one here seemed to dare
mention it along side the Prophet-5, Jupiter-8,
etc...as if even the mere mentioning of the machine is
blasphemy.
Like it or not, almost every top40 song from '84-'87
probably has some DX on it. Yes, it's digital FM
synthesis, not analog subtractive, but these are still
deep, complex machines for making original
sounds...and are true synthesizers in that they force
you to build sounds up from scratch (sine waves).

Personally I think the Yamaha FM instruments got a bad
reputation because their synthesis method required way
more thought and patience than people were willing to
give them. But hey, what discussion of 80's synths
would be complete without giving these credit?

I love my TX-816! There, I said it! :)

The archives should be full of comparisons, and Music Machines has the
concise versions, but for JP-4 specifics, go here:
