love my JP-8

love my JP-8

2008-09-29 by nanoshark

Hi, been lurking for awhile, don't see a lot except spam going on. I'm
a longtime synth geek. I have a perfect Jupiter-8 that is one of my
prized possessions. I gigged it twice in the late 90's, but don't have
a proper case for it. It lives in the home studio forever now.

I had read that it's so heavy that it can eventually bend itself on
some keyboard stands. I cut a piece of 7/8" plywood, and after a year
or two, I see that is is starting to bend that!

Great to see another Jupiter-8 owner on here. I have one myself that I’m sadly parted from as it’s in my home country of Australia while I’m in the UK.

I think mine is probably due a good check-up and service, which I’ll do when I next go back... it’s a bit like going to the dentist though isn’t it? You don’t really want to know if anything’s wrong!

Hi guys,

Great to see some action on the list. Indeed, it has been a while... ;-)

I do my best to keep spam from entering the messages, but I'm afraid I can only do so much. Every once in a while an offending (or just plane annoying) message gets through. I'm sorry for that.

Your friendly moderator (er, that's me) is also a proud owner of a JP8. And yes, it is that heavy. When I went out on gigs we had to carry the case with at least two guys. It now (also) lives in my studio. I placed it on a hard-board vinyl-coated plate, supported by four placeholders which are tightly screwed into the concrete wall of my humble home studio.

'The beast' also needs some servicing. It still works great but there are a few glitches that could be repaired. All in good time though. I'm afraid to take it outdoors nowadays. And...it might also gonna cost me a modest fortune to get the job done...

Cheers for now,
Ricardo

Hello guyz!
Indeed long time no hear so let's bring da JP8 back in buziness :-)
My Jup8 just sits on a table in my studio, but before that I had a (pretty strong) X-stand but after some years it started to bend because of the JP8...A heavy synth with heavenly sounds :-)
Mine is in very good condition, except in wintertime: it takes half-an-hour before the DCB accepts/transmits signals from my KENTON PRO-DCB... I bought a brand new DCB cable from Kenton but the problem still exists... What I do now is to keep the temperature in my studio up,but this ofcourse is a bit expensive...But as I have alot of vintage gear,it's better to keep it all a bit warm don't you guyz think?
bye

Re: [Roland_Jupiters] love my JP-8

2008-09-30 by Scott S.

Well, mine may easily need to be checked, but it is remarkable
circumstances that I own it. I bought it about 15 years ago, from a
guitar player that never figured it out. I paid..... USD $90 for it.
Yes, I see the insanity of them on Ebay. I know that 20 year old
electrical anythings can deteriorate, caps leak, etc. I've never done
a thing to it, and nothing is lacking, that I can tell. If the
original owner couldn't figure it out enough to play it, it's unlikely
he learned to store patches. I assume that it's all factory patches
still, it's also rather surprising that the battery is still good.

I've got a couple of monosynths, a Roland SH-101 and a Prodigy as
well, but the JP-8 is the real deal for me.

I've been watching the craziness of SH-101's on Ebay also. I have too
many projects languishing for lack of money, that I am going to
probably sell the SH-101. It has remarkable circumstances behind it,
as well. A church bought it new, and THEY never really figured it out.
I bought it from them for USD $50 about 12 years ago, red with Roland
strap and mod grip. The church guys also built a monster case for it.
It's made of solid half inch plywood, and weighs a whole lot. Too lazy
to convert to metric, by comparison cheap cases are 1/4" and better
ones are 3/8".

It's never seen the inside of a smoky bar, and is basically unplayed,
although there was some battery leak in the battery compartment. The
leak touches no parts, only the inside of a metal lid, so it will
clean up nicely.
