almost unusable for most sounds without it. However
the problem with unison is the sound starts to get
harsh/distorted/overdriven whatever as you crank all
those friggin osc out the same outputs at the same
pitch. This is especially true on the Jup-8 where the
sound is radically changed and, IMO, just sounds
terrible for 95% of most patches.
