Subject: [AH] Using the MKS80 I'm a little bit confused by my MKS80, and don't have a manual. I notice that controlling filter cutoff via system exclusive controllers (pc1600) is effective but leads to stepping that is difficult to conceal. I've also noticed that you can control filter cutoff via the modulation wheel by setting the aftertouch/mod section to filter and adjusting the sensitivity accordingly for the upper and lower voice. This seems to create less stepping. I've noticed that the upper voice responds very well to this. The lower voice seems to lag behind, however, as if the sweep were milliseconds behind. Not a bad effect on slower sounds but not good for faster shorter sounds. Does anybody know why this is so? Also, if aftertouch can control filter cutoff, can I route another c.c. to aftertouch? Is aftertouch a continuous controller? If so, what number is it? I've noticed myself using the MKS80 more since I've started compressing it. They synth benefits from this alot. . . I'm not sure why. The mid range gets more interesting. I've also noticed that the sounds are better layered. I typically avoid layered sounds because they sound like bad factory presets, but the MKS80, perhaps because of its somewhat narrow range of sounds, sounds good with layers. Also, I've heard reports on the net that timing with the MKS80 is sloppy. I'm confused by this, as I don't notice it at all. It does choke with rapid controller changes. But rapid controller changes usually sound stupid when you listen to things with more distance. I'm still wondering about Jupiter 8s and am continuing to sell off gear till I can afford one.
