Like it or not, almost every top40 song from '84-'87 probably has some DX on it. Yes, it's digital FM synthesis, not analog subtractive, but these are still deep, complex machines for making original sounds...and are true synthesizers in that they force you to build sounds up from scratch (sine waves). Personally I think the Yamaha FM instruments got a bad reputation because their synthesis method required way more thought and patience than people were willing to give them. But hey, what discussion of 80's synths would be complete without giving these credit? I love my TX-816!
