New user instillation and printing using Epson Luster with Glop

I'm having all sorts of problems using the QTR system. I sort of stumbled upon this system when I was trying to figure out why my Epson 1800 had a pink hue in B&W mode. Here are the specifics. Epson R1800, Ultra Chrome Ink, Epson Papers, CS4, OS 10.5.8, QTR 2.7.0 I want to print B&W on luster paper, but the gloss optimizer is not happening. Therefore the prints smear when they are finished. I've tried simply re-running the paper through & printing a blank document. This process works, but the print is so fragile without the Glop that is scratches, etc. For the record the B&W tones are much better using the QTR system. I've downloaded some sort of Matt Chapin GLOP curve files, and think I installed the correctly, but they don't show up in my print menu. I'm completely frustrated!!! I just want a good B&W print on luster paper and I've spent 3 days with nothing more than wasted paper. The QTR system and instructions are NOT easy to understand and there are so many little tips & tricks & curves, that I'm getting further and further away from my original intention. I do not want to buy another ink or another paper. If it's just not possible to get a good B&W print using all Epson products would someone just tell me. Thanks-
