What do I need to use a DTP-32 with QTR.

What do I need to use a DTP-32 with QTR.

2005-08-28 by John Vitollo

Hi Everyone,

I'm a longtime user of QTR but never built curves myself...I always
tweaked them by hand
or had another person build them for me.

I have a DTP-32 that I'd like to put to use building and linerizing
profiles as I'm adding a
lighter gray to the UT-2 inks of my 1280. I have the power supply and
serial cable also.

When I power up the DTP the window asks for a calibration strip...so
I assume I need to
buy one. Do I need anything else?

I see in the files section there are step wedges for the DTP. So I
guess I could use those?

I have Macs one old 8500/OS9 and QuickSilver 10.4. From my previous
readings on the
subject I could just read data and enter by hand from the DTP. Seems
like I could
download data from the DTP to the 8500 via the serial cable. What
program would I use on
the OS 9 Mac?

Did I leave anything out?

Thanks,

John V.

John

An alternative to xkey for the modern Mac is ToolCrib from x-rite, available
through this link:

http://www.xrite.com/support_doc.aspx?Lang=en&SoftwareID=196

The so-called Generic device provides the x-key functions and supports the
older densitometers with serial interfaces such as the 810.

Hi John,

I'm using an X-Rite Pulse (DTP20) and can let you have a
comprhensive pdf I got from X-rite last week. It contains a link to
download Toolcrib (which includes Xkey) and a link to download
colorshop X, which is what I use. The information in the pdf is
easy to follow. I download to a spread sheet (because the spectro
gives me C M Y info as well) and copy from the spreadsheet and paste
into QTR.

The DTP 32 shows up in Colorshop X from a dropdown menu, so I think
it might be compatable, but it doesn't show up in the Toolcrib menu
as a valid device. Let me know if you would like the pdf/

regards, Jamie

Thanks Jamie and Tom!

Jamie I sent you an email to forward the PDF.

I've done some research into connecting the old DTP-22/32 densitometers from serial to
USB. Seems like the Mac only adapter from Keyspan USA-28x and the cross-platform
USA19QW or USA19HS models work well as mentioned in the email below.

Here's a few copy and paste from my notes:

From: RaymondCheydleur

There are several possibilities, but first we need to be clear about what
instrument you really have. A DTP22 is a chassis, that several instruments
are built upon: Digital Swatchbook, CA22, GA22 and a host of specialized OEM
and medical instruments. By your description you most likely have a Digital
Swatchbook instrument, and thus in ToolCrib you need to select the Digital
Swatchbook as the instrument not a "DTP22." Before you do this, I'd
recommend unplugging the instrument from power and reconnecting, this will
perform a soft reset which will aid in communications.

Note that not all Keyspan adapters are alike. Under OSX we have found the
older Keyspan USA 28 (beige) adapter typically do not work well. We have
also found that "PDA adapters" do not work consistently either. We have had
continued success with the Mac only Keyspan USA-28x and the cross-platform
USA19QW or USA19HS models.
