mixing ink sets

Has anyone successfully mixed two separate ink sets together to maximize the strengths of each individual ink set? Right now I'm trying to mix NK7 inks with Piezotone warm neutral inks in a 7600 while attempting to create a profile in QTR to distribute these inks where and how I want them. I will admit this is a bit of an experiment, but are my efforts futile? The step wedges I've been getting are interesting although frustrating. Any input on ink set mixing would be appreciated.
