New Windows versions of QTR and Print Tool

New Windows versions of QTR and Print Tool

2019-10-13 by jharvey@...

I've been working on switching over to Windows for various reasons. Just wondering if anyone here is a programmer and if they would be interested in coming up with a new QTR system including a port of Print Tools for Windows in conjunction with Roy. I love Print Tools and QTR as they exist in the Mac World and it is the only reason other than Richard Boutwell wonderful software which keeps me from Windows 10. I know it is heresy but that's where I am. Tired of Apple making it harder and harder to use even the 2012 Pro and pushing their Unbelievably expensive hardware. I think they are really more interested in Phones and Tablets. I might have seriously irritated Roy with my requests for Windows Ports. You might have a better chance if you have programming abilities to offer. Just a thought.

This is a perennial problem with the computer/art/photo world. For better or worse The educational and photo art community drove the technology based in Apple products. I recently threw in the towel on trying to fit my PC into the workflow when it comes to QTR, Digital Negatives, Digital Positives, Piezography and purchased a MacBook Pro. Paid a kings ransom for it, but the QTR print tool for Mac makes working in this world much easier. I will continue to manipulate my files on my PC but will use the MacBook for output.

FWIW, I use Windows with the stand-alone QTR version. It works great for me. To deal with today's super-bright monitors, I simply make my own preview curve for printing. The main point I9;ve found is to have to curves layer end point be 100, 50.

I suspect monitors are sufficiently different that making your own preview layer is part of the game. I use a representative image file that has a 21-step step wedge at the bottom to calibrate. I print the file, then I use the print, under appropriate light (matching, roughly, the display conditions) to tweak the viewing curve.

I actually work up the file mostly with the monitor in its super-bright default mode. Making a "print" version is a last step. I have to walk away from the monitor for a while so that the "dull" image whites are not (mentally) compared to the bright monitor.

At any rate, in my view, dealing with how to preview the image is just part of the process that the individual has to deal with.

If you are using it just as a print server, why not just buy a cheap used mac for $500. I have a G3 and G5 I use for my drum scanners and printer for that reason as well.

I would love to have a Windows port of Print Tool, or a QTR back-end within Qimage. I'd pay serious money for either... or both.

Right now I lay out jobs in Qimage and print to file, then load that to print in the QTR Windows app. That's not ideal... but I really don't want to buy a Mac.

Do you want a newer version of QTRGui or a Windows version of Print-Tool? The latter would be quite a bit more effort.

How much would you be willing to pay for either?

I've pretty much always used QTRGui on Windows. I understand the attractions of the MacOS workflow, but I've never considered switching for all the reasons the OP mentioned. The Windows workflow works. It's different, perhaps not as smooth, but it works. I have access to a Mac for printing should I wish, but it's not worth the trouble to switch machines just for printing IMHO, when Windows works. (There is a caveat for 10 ink printers.)

There was talk a while back of a port of Print Tool to Windows. Not sure what happened to that. Perhaps the Catalina upgrade will breathe new life into it.

For me, as stated earlier I'd love either a Windows port of Print Tool or, even better a QTR back-end within Qimage. Or I guess something equivalent, although obviously a more greenfield development effort would up the development ante.

I'd personally pay up to what it would cost to buy a reasonable Mac for printing, which I am by far less inclined to do. I would also be willing to put time in by supporting the effort as an early stage tester. This is something I had a lot of experience doing in my first ~30-year IT career.
