Hi

Working with a 1430, Eboni 6 configuration (standard ink dilution- bought 6 bottles already made), I am nearly there. Since I will always have differences between my monitor and the final print, I want to tweak a curve by hand. Looking at my prints, there is a small lack of contrast but, more important, it looks like there is a lot of compression in the blacks (loosing definition).


I don't know what to change in an already made .qidf profile; for comparison, I tried to lower the ink limit (from 35 to 30) and see if there is any differences. To my eyes there is not much.


As for printing a greyscale, reading it and linearize, I've done that quite a few times but for most part, the QTR Linearize data cannot work since it seems that there is too little differences in readings?!?


Actually I'm quite happy with the profile made by Mr.Roark (Eb6-EpsHPn-T (even if I use the Cold Press instead of the Hot Press). Where to look for in all the lines of the profile???

You don't want to mess with the ink limits, because that will throw off the gray values (cross over points) settings for each of the lighter dilutions and can cause banding in smooth gradients or even bad tonal reversals.

To give the shadows more separation you can try increasing the GRAY_SHADOW=" " default is something like 4-8 but I've been using a shadow setting of 15-18 for this inkset)

You can also try increasing the GRAY_GAMMA=" " start with an increase to 1.2 to see if that helps,

You will need to then relinearize the profile.

If I understand well, I could use that profile, edit it in a text editor, save it then drop it on the "QTR Linearize data" Applet too shave a new profile.

I'll start with the "Grey shadow" to see the difference then, after seeing the results, I'll get to that "Gray gamma " thing.

small question: do I need to relinearize if I'm just changing the tray shadow value?

I did increase it and I dropped the whole profile on to the QTR_Linearize date, then I changed the values in the linearize line. After that I made the quad file.

Is it the way to do it?

Do I have to read the patches from black-to-white or the other way around?

Printed the 21 step scale, read it with Spyderprint and exported it to a text file. Made 8 sets of measurements from light to dark.

Any text file dropped on "QTR-Linearize data" give me the same answer : 'The Lab values are not in order.
Cannot be linearized."
Don,t know if I like the way it goes…

My response from a few days ago didn't show up, and am just now getting back to this.

You need to relinearize every time you change the settings the ink limits, gray values, or other gray shadows/highlights/gamma options. You need to do these things in the following steps:

Change some setting(s)

Delete previous linearization settings from the profile you are editing . You can not linearize on top of a previously linearized profile because there can only be one 'Linearize="97.4 ... 16.35" ' line (well, it turn out that you really can do it, but it takes a lot of work... I will explain later).
Save the edited profile

Print 21 step target with the new profile

Measure the target (lightest to darkest-should be left to right), and drop the measurement file onto the LinearizeData script

If you did not get the "values not in order" error Plug the resulting Linearize="97.4 ... 16.35" back into the profile. (or paste into the Windows gui) If you still get the error, then see below.

Resave and reinstall the profile and make a print to check that the linearization it worked.


One reason you are getting the "Lab values not constantly increasing" or "not in order" is might be because the ink limit settings were changed, or the cross over points are not accurate. If you do keep getting those errors I would bet there is something wrong with your cross over points. On the other hand, it could be problems with errors in the measurements themselves. These errors can be averaged out by using the 21x4 target. I built a custom reference file that allows me to average 6 measurements from a single 21 step target to save and paper/ink rather than printing multiples of the same patch values. The built in 21x4-random target might be just as good. . .

Accurate Cross Over Points:

The cross overs determine where the next ink starts and trails off. If they are set to the wrong value then one ink will be starting and dropping off before and after it really should. That is usually where you will get spikes and dips in the tonal scale and in your measurements, which will cause problems linearizing the profile. This is the one reason why I am constantly saying "you don't mess with the ink limits after you create a working profile or after you have set your cross over points". When you are creating profiles with 4 or more overlapping inks the cross over point becomes more critical because they are jumping in and out faster than with fewer inks.

I actually don't know if what follows below is possible on a PC, but is one huge benefit of being able to see what is happening in the Terminal on the Mac. To do this you will need to have "GRAPH_CURVE=YES" in the top of the profile/descriptor file.

If you don't have reversals, but the Lab_L values are too close together and you get the "not constantly increasing" error when you try to install the profile you can rough in your gray curve to get close to linear by using the input/output correction curve the QTR linearization script creates for linearizing the .quad values. This correction curve is created before you get the "not constantly increasing error"so you can use it whenever you have a problem with installing/linearizing a profile.

Go the terminal window after running the install script and look for the profile that is causing the problem. You can find this by looking for "Creating Curve curvename" ( It should be in alphabetical order) Find the lines for "LINEARIZE_CURVE = 0,0 3.43,5 7.4,10 ... or whatever your actual values are ". Copy and paste those to numbers to the GRAY_CURVE= line in your profile/descriptor file — You will need to put double quotes before and after the whole line and change the commas to semicolons between the input/output numbers (I just use find/replace in the text editor). You can even delete every other input/output pair to give you 11 10% steps that gets the profile close and then fine tune that with the 5% 21-step target.

I don't use this method too much now, but it works well to get a profile close to linear before actual final linearization. Since you are going to relinearize the roughed in curve/profile you need to delete the original linearization values, save and reinstall the profile, and reprint the 21step target with the new profile. Then measure it again and plug the Lab_L measurements back into the linearize="..." line. If that doesn't work then I would start from scratch measuring the ink limit page and resetting your cross overs...

Can you email me your last few measurement files of your 21 step target and your unlinearized .quad file that you used to print it (you could send your .qdif/.text file too). I will take a look in to see what is going on there. I have been messing with an idea for fixing these kinds of problems and this would be a great test. No guarantee that I can fix it, but I'll give it a shot.

Does it makes any sense to anyone if QTR wont accept GRAY_CURVE="0;0 100;100" but will accept LINEARIZE_CURVE="0;0 100;100" ??

I can change the curve value from CURVE_K to CURVE_Y but it will not accept GRAY_CURVE=

Curve specified “0;0 100;100” but no valid data found at /Library/Printers/QTR/bin/quadprofile line 41.


If I change GRAY_CURVE= to LINEARIZE_CURVE= QTR will accept the profile.

FWIW: I am running Yosemite 10.9.5

That doesn't really make sense. Where in your profile are you trying to insert the GRAY_CURVE="0;0 100;100"? Although I just tried putting it in a few different the places in the text file and each one installed with no problem so that really shouldn't matter.

Since you are trying to make a straight line between 0 and 100 you could just leave it off for now, but does entering any other set of curve coordinates work? Can you test this with a different profile? Duplicate an existing working profile, rename it and drop in the curve coordinates like it is below here.

GRAY_HIGHLIGHT=6
GRAY_SHADOW=10
OVERLAP=0

GRAY_GAMMA=1
GRAY_CURVE="0;0 100;100"

I haven't upgraded to Yosemite yet, so I won't be able to get around to testing this until later next week.

Not sure what I did but I am a little smarter now. I finally have it working, after 4 hours. The straight line "0;0 100;100" concept was an attempt to "bare bones" the issue. Strip it down to the most minimal configuration and diagnose it starting at that point.

I removed QTR completely from the computer, reboot, re-installed, same issue. Installed QTR from scratch on a different system & it worked, then it didn't, then it did. I finally created a profile from scratch & got it working. If you open quadprofile in a text editor and look at Line 41, it is a function call that passes the name of the profile. Doesn't matter - I renamed the profile to 'thang' & it didn't help.

All I can say is it is somewhere in the way the profile is passed to the quadprofile script and the formatting of the 'GRAY_CURVE=' statement. A "SWAG" is the issue lies somewhere between the formatting and the system's memory buffer.

What did start working was 11 steps of GRAY_CURVE="0;0 10;10 20;20... 100;100"

The formatting of the lines with x-y coordinates is important. If you get some thing
that doesn't work careful checking usually shows the problem. But if it "sure" looks right
sometimes there are invisible characters - just re-typing (not cut&paste) the whole
line will fix it.

I am slowly beginning agree with you. Copy & pasting from one profile doesn't always work either. The easiest way is to do as you said, retype it from beginning. But, that doesn't always work either.

For example, I duplicated a working R280-UPPM-KO profile, created a standard CURVE_K="0;0 5;5 10;10... 100;100" and it failed.

I copied a CURVE_K="" statement from one of Paul Roark's BO profiles & it did work. Copy & pasted the above contents into this statement & it worked. So I am guessing that there was an issue with either the 'CURVE_K' or "double quotes". I am about to switch to Vim editor just to see what is going on with those hidden characters. It those pesky ghost fonts that is causing all of these issues...

I was working with copying editing quad curves from excel straight into TextEdit where I opened the original .quad file, and it would never work. Pasting the same thing into TextWranger and saving that as .quad works just fine though. There has to be something with the way the qtr script sees white space or carriage returns that causes these kinds of problems. I'd don't know what those things actually do to cause the problem but i've gotten ok at whackin around them.

You might want to try something like textwrangler to see if that alone solves the problem.

The same thing happened to me. If you save an Excel file of an edited quad curve, Excel inserts carriage returns instead of line feeds which wrecks the quad curve. It also puts a quotation mark at the beginning of the file. What I do is save the Excel file as a tab delimited text file, then edit that file in a hex editor (like Hex Fiend, which is free). Find and replace hex value 22 (quotation marks) with nothing, and find and replace hex value 0D (carriage return) with hex value 0A (line feed). Save the modified file with a .quad extension.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
