QTR-Quadtone RIP

Morning everyone,

As you will no doubt know the option for 'No Colour Management' has been removed from Photoshop since CS5 I believe. A 'work around' exists through Adobe Print Utility which allows test charts to be created for profiling etc.  As a result the creation of a paper specific B&W ICC profile has been straightforward using the Create ICC Droplet.  This allows me to work through the Epson driver with 'Photoshop Manages Colours'.

However, as I'd like to use the QTR print driver (I'm a Windows 7 user)could someone please confirm that the QTR driver works in absolute isolation to the Epson driver.  Clearly, the issue is ensuring that colour management is turned off.  All of the workflow docs I've read include references to 'no colour management' being engaged on the Epson driver but with this now removed how are users working around this?

I used to use QTR with Win7 with no problems, it doesn't use the Photoshop or Epson printer drivers, it is only within Photoshop that you can't turn off colour management. I now use QTR with win 8.1 and this works perfectly apart from "show curves" within the curve creation part of the program. I can still create curves and they work or create the curves within QTR on Win7 and import them into QTR on Win8.1. Any help you need, if I can provide it including my own curves for Epson 2880, please note that I use a Permajet CIS which appears to be slightly warmer than Epson original inks so the curves may not be perfectly neutral.

Ken, please could you tell me what hardware device you use to create the curves for your Permajet CIS

Ian I use a Data color Spector colorimeter Model #1005. This device can be read by Spyder Print 4.2.3. This is not the most modern device but the QTR output is neutral or as neutral as my Kodak test chart. I can also print from 0 to 255 and can measure the difference between all levels, so no need for lifted curves in the shadows when I print in mono, I still need to lift shadows when printing in colour. Ken

Thanks for that Ken. The only hardware device I have is the colour munki and I am not sure if that is capable of creating curves for my Canson papers

I've used a Colormunki Photo device to take the readings needed to 
create QTR curves, but that was a few years ago, and can't remember the 
details. There's a description of the process on the Northlight Images 
website (

) and a test page specifically designed for reading the 'black' 
densities with the ColourMunki (chevrons rather than rectangular boxes).
There's a lot of useful information for monochrome printers on that site.
