Hi Alan. Try unchecking preserve color #s and go from there. Also look back a few weeks in archives here for Roy's post regarding the different uses of softproofing. I think it may help you with your problem. Also, what do you get if you simply convert the 21 step grayscale to Qtrmatt.icc or photo and print it? You should get a nice black. If you don't, it might mean your curves aren't correct.
