When calibrating the user of course has a target gamma choice, generally 1.8 or 2.2 with sometimes more choices as well. But that difference will only be visually apparent with apps that are not icc aware. With apps that are, those differences will disappear as the monitor profile is in the loop and the gamma differences "corrected".
