Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Differences between "Gray ink", "Toner", "Toner 2" in the "Curve Creator"

2015-11-09 by Paul Roark

Thilo,

I think QTR handles the "channels" the same whether they are labeled "Gray" of "Toner."

I call the light blue ink in the Yellow position a "toner," but you'll see in some if not most of the profiles, I do a "load curve" approach and make a custom curve. You might find copying the point list from one such profile and posting it into a new profile for a similar paper gives a more even final print tone than using the "toner" and QTR inputs to control the shape of the curve.

I also just uploaded an updated "Profiles" zip file. It includes some profiles I've generated relating to canvas that I'm not experimenting with.

Good luck with the inkset. It's been working very well for me.

Hello everybody at the QTR group,

this is Thilo from germany with a question regarding a detail in the
"Curve Creator" within QTR.

For every ink one can choose the following points/despriptions: "Gray
ink", "Toner", "Toner 2", "Copy curve from" or "Load curve".

Recently I started to follow Paul Roark on his path to port Eboni-6 to
the Epson 3880 in a "Variable-Tone" format, details here:
http://paulroark.com/BW-Info/3880-Eboni-Variable-Tone.pdf

Until now, using an 1400 and Eboni-6, I mostly used the "Gray
ink"-option in the fields. Now it's the first time that i use a (light
blue) toner, too.

My question: What ist the difference between the options "Gray ink",
"Toner", "Toner 2"?

Is QTR handling the ink channels in a different way, depending on which
option I choose?

Or are the options "Gray ink", "Toner", "Toner 2" just a convenient
and/or informative way to keep record on the functions of these inks in
a certain curve? (In the case of the 3880-Eboni-Variable-Tone the yellow
ink is marked as "Toner", but there seems to be not difference when i
make it a "Gray ink".

I haven't found this detail anywhere - hope this is not a silly question.

Best - Thilo
