That filter issue with Mavericks is interesting. I was getting something similar few months ago with Mavericks when printing color work through photoshop and the epson driver. I ended up just upgrading everything to Yosemite and it solved the problem (although I have no idea what the actual problem was). I just tested this at home with Yosemite and QTR and it seems to be working at output resolution settings of 720 and 1440 super—both when printing through PrintTool as well as text documents printed straight through the OS. If you have the RAM I would just suggest upgrading. I think Yosemite is easier to look at anyway...
