Have you selected 'calibration mode' from the qtrgui tools->options menu? There detailed (if somewhat old) instructions for PC users in Tome Moore's guide at http://www.quadtonerip.com/User%20Guide.pdf which I think are still up to date for the calibration process, though possibly not tested on Windows 8.
