This is from the company President. It's nice to know he's taking
this seriously. He also brings up some valid points regarding the
dimensional tolarances of plugs and even more pertainent, the shape of
the tips which vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. It's easy to
say that jacks should work with all plugs, but the other side of the
coin should hold true as well...plugs should work with all jacks. In
any event, he's not stopping there and he wants samples back for
evaluation and he's already working wiith his factory. They've purged
their inventory and are doing a bunch of AQL tests to determine the
scope of this issue.
here's the letter:

Hi Peter,

I am sorry to hear that you are having some reliability problems with
the CL1384. From the units that you are getting back from customers
for jack replacement, please can you send us the faulty jack sockets
so that we can send them to our QA Manager for evaluation. Please
send to Cliff USA ASAP and they will forward them onto our QA Manager
in the UK.

Is the problem due to the contacts not opening fully and if it is, do
you think it could it be something to do with some of the plugs that
are being used in the jacks? As you know there are many different
variants of 3.5mm jack plugs out in the world and the dimensions can
vary. Because we cannot control the type and size of plug that is used
in our jacks, we have had problems in the past particularly with
undersized plugs not opening the switched contacts fully.
