serge knobs on Plan B modular

serge knobs on Plan B modular

Hi Peter

my friend Phil sent me a photo of his modular with serge style knobs
and they look really cool...so I am interested in doing the same.

can you confirm that these will fit exactly with your Plan Bs

cheers

They won't work. There are a bunch of reasons. I posted a long
letter about this recently on the Analogue Haven forum. You may want
to look that up there. In summary, if you go that route, you have two
options:

1) The Davies require 1/4 inch cylindrical shafts. Doepfer, Plan B,
Analogue Solutions and Systems' pots use 6mm knurled shafts. If you
put the Davies on them the knobs will turn concentrically (they'll
whooble as they go around).

2) Change the pots to 1/4 inch straight shafts. There are many
different values you'll need to concern yourself with. At Mouser
these pots are $1.34 each at quantity.

If they have a lock screw on the side, they aren't design for this
application and I do not beleive Davies has retooled. If anything
there was talk that these knobs were being dq'd...that is what I have
heard floating around.

I'd call or write them and check it out first.

RE: [PLAN_B_analog_blog] Re: serge knobs on Plan B modular

What Peter is saying is true BUT the problem is not that bad. I have several of the Davies clones on my system (utilizing the 6.5mm shafts found on Doepfer, Plan B) and yes there is some concentric travel, but it is not very obvious. Somebody suggested a clipping from a drinking straw made up the difference perfectly. I have not tried that, but it seems likely as the difference from .25" and 6.5mm is very small. I would suggest buying a handful and trying it out, you could always have them as spares for your Serge system if they do not work out.

I too wanted something that looks better than those ugly grey Doepfer knobs or touches
nicer than the typical cheap spongey Euro knobs. But it seemed like all the higher quality
knobs are set screw types.

I found the straw technique works pretty good in centering 1/4" knobs. You may have to
try a few different straws to find ones that have the optimal thickness.
