Mellotronists

John was a close neighbour, and I am sad to say I spent a splendidly drunken
Christmas Eve and Boxing day with mutual friends and his family at his home
last year. No doubt he failed to realise that we were not there on Christmas
Day, but that was just a mild display of his excess....... Sad, because none
of us knew it it would be his last.

 As well as being a complete virtuoso on the bass, he helped design and
develop instruments over the years, and his collection of over 230 guitars
was something to behold!... No Mellotrons at Entwistle Towers to my
knowledge, but a very rare WurliTzer guitar took my eye, as well as a '57
Flying V., He was also an inveterate collector; cars (Despite never having
learned to drive!) and antiques in particular, and his Rolls Royce Shadow
Station Wagon was a familiar sight in Gloucestershire, recognisable by the
distinctive licence plate of FAL 1C!! 

Other less well known Entwistle talents are worth noting:  
He was the only member of the Who with formal musical training. He played
keyboards and French Horn! He was also a talented artist and brilliant
cartoonist / cariacaturist. ... (Lennon was shite by comparison in that
particular field. No one in their right mind would have bothered buying a
Lennon cartoon save for the fact that it was by John Lennon. Artistically
his cartoon work was childish and talentless, but Entwistle's work could
rival or challenge the likes of Calman, John Glashan, Steadman, etc.) 

Locally he was well known for being a generous benefactor to the
community..... and a nice bloke. Good on him. 

Another sad day indeed.
