Mellotronists

Hi All.
This topic certainly has awakened those of us not used to public speaking. So 
here goes.
Surely the point is whether the sounds, whether old or new, sound, well, 
UNUSUAL!
Y'see if I want the sound of an orchestra, I'm better of with a sampler, 
because, in theory, the digital platform won't add or distort the original. 
It'll merely create a facsimile. The charm for me of the tron is that it does 
add an unpredictability to the finished result. Question: Has the original 
flute sound been used time after time because...
A) It sounds like a flute...(top D anyone!) OR 
B) because it just sounds bloody great!
I rest my case m'lord!
Martin will be sniggering at this I know because he knows that my great 
ambition is to spend time and re-tune my all time fav sound MK2 Brass! The 
purists will probably say that its "out of tuneness" adds to it supreme 
character, but in my opinion, bringing 3 or 4 notes to heel will improve the 
overall usefulness of this classic sound.
I dont want faithful recreations of original sounds. I want original sounds!
I remember recording A Christian album back in the 70's. I turned up at the 
studio, plugged in my pride and joy. The producer wouldn't use it much. 
Preferring the sound of a Solina String machine!!! Needless to say we didn't 
get on.
