it was "guff dungeon" (as xtc knew him); bowie had met visconti during the 
original acoustic recording at maida vale (bbc), and (according to one 
account) recruited him as bassist. he was hired after the single, not for it, 
and probably copped a few ideas from the late-lamented. it's a damn shame.
