#703 makeover

2007-03-17 by Doug Berg

If anyone is thinking of giving theirs a facelift, I've posted some
pix in Photo section. All in all this one was still in pretty good
shape structurally. The only really bad part was on the back just
above the acess panel where the plywood had seperated and a piece
was wedged above the lower lip behind the paint. After carefully
chiseling out the bad section, found it to be only one layer, so the
scrap wood bin came in handy after cutting a layer and gluing it in
place. The other issue were the feet. The left side had both
eyelets broken from mounting plate. Of course the amp was in the
way. These will be tack welded back on. The hardest part was block
sanding the old paint where the grain of the wood has left
crevices. By the time it got smoothed out, most of the original
finish was gone. To prevent this from occuring again, I used Mar-
Hyde epoxy primer, which is mixed in 3 parts, when it sets it is
really tough. After blocking the primer I applied DuPont sealer
(straight from can) which will prevent the paint from getting sucked
in to the wood as it dries. The finish will be Krylon Antique White
Satin which is as close as I could find to original color.
The transport assembly seems to be in good shape and all fasteners
were still tight. A lot of cleaning especially to the aluminum
pieces. Motor still in good shape, no abnormal wear to the brushes
or commutator. All plugs and connectors still clean. Should be
done in a couple of weeks. One thing that amazed me is the serial
number is everywhere, the cabinet, top keyboard end pieces,
transport and front and rear acess doors, and I'm not painting over
them. By the way Jerry, no mice in this one either! Doug
