Nice to meet you!

Nice to meet you!

2002-02-04 by a5h_pm

Good Evening all yee fellow Marci owners.

Let me first introduce myself, my name is Ashley and I am located in
the UK (Herts.) I acquired my Marcos (a car I had always ALWAYS
wanted), about 5 or so years ago now. It was/is in need of a full
restoration. This does mean that to this day I have never driven my
car, or been out in another for that matter! (I am gagging to have a
go!). The restoration made strong progress in the first few months of
ownership, with a full body off rebuild of the chassis. Unfortunately
this was as far as it got until early last year due to the usual jobs
and house buying etc. Anyway I have made a concerted effort to get
the car back on the road. I thought I would have time to do the rub
down and re-spray myself but have to hand it over to the capable
hands of my friendly spray shop (Gary is a Lotus trained specialist
so he knows is Fibre glass).

Having only stumbled across this Group by accident on Friday and
spent the last few days going through all of the messages thus far, I
have a number of questions I hope you will all be able to assist me
with. Now the bit you've all been waiting for me to tell you. My car
is a 1969 V4 2litre (#2M5504). I am going to convert it I'm afraid to
an Essex V6, (mainly because I have a reconditioned engine from one
of my fathers waiting projects - Scimitar GTE), is this as
straightforward as it seems. Whilst reading through the various
entries I noted that someone said that all the V6 cars had 4 speed
gearbox with overdrive as standard - is this the case? I only have my
original 4 speed box to put in at the moment - is it worth me
sourcing an overdrive box at this stage?

I have gone through all the parts I have missing, and surprisingly
the main thing appears to be, the locking mechanism for the driver's
door (I have the striker plate). The door is a new one - I believe
some one ran into the door - hence the car was off the road for 10
years prior to my ownership. I have been told that this lock is from
an Austin A40 - can anyone confirm this and does any one have one
spare or a source to obtain one (Marcos Heritage can't find one).

Does anyone have any spare seat squabs they are willing to part with?
Mine are in need of lots of work - which I will have done, but I need
to get the car running first.

So far the car has been completely rubbed back, and all the spider s
sorted! the car was then gel coated several times before being filler
coated with a high build filler. Currently the car is in primer
waiting for its final colour (color for those over the pond), which
is Gulf GT40 powder blue (one of my favourite cars). I know this was
not an original colour but it is a period colour at least.

I've had the sunroof remade and as soon as the car is sprayed and
cured, it will have the roof lining redone, 'A' and 'B' post trimmed
and sunroof fitted, which all seem necessary prior to re-fitting the
glass. On another question has anyone found a source for a roll over
bar which would also be best fitted prior to the rear glass at least,
being re-fitted? I am planning on tackling the rest of the interior
myself, but if the trimmers do a good job (at the right price!), I
may have them do the rest, (they are Aston Martin specialist so the
job is sure to be good but at what cost is anyone's guess!)

I hope I've not bored you all with stories you've all heard before,
but I would love to have any advice I can get, because prior to this
group, and the Marcos maniacs web site, I was working pretty blind,
(Torque and CMI the exception!). If any of you would like to see pics
of my car they can be found on www.molyneuxs.com please forgive the
amateur nature of the site I have not had much time to rework it yet.
Any info on previous owners etc of my car would be greatly received;
the original reg was TKN 164H.

Keep on motoring (and making me jealous)

Hi Ashley,
The door locks are from an Austin A40 on the early cars (My Marcos is a 1966 model and it has the Austin A40 locks) and I am not sure when Marcos changed to a different lock. I bought two locks for my Marcos (with keys) for 20 pounds in 1997 from H. Maslin, 40 Neal Road, West Kingsdown, Kent, TN156DF U.K.
Telephone# 01474854005. Mr. Maslin specializes in Austins (not Marcos) and has been in business for a long time. I have no idea if he is still at the Neal road address but that is the last address I have for him. I also have a diagram of the Austin lock from an Austin manual but my scanner isn't working at the moment. Let me know if you need the diagram I will find a way to scan it into the computer and email it to you.
Best of luck and welcome to the Marcos Maniacs.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your prompt reply, (that's what I love about these
groups). If I understand you correctly you are saying that the locks
on your car use the entire mechanism, including the key lock? Mine
certainly has the MGB boot lock style mechanism, does this mean that
mine are in fact later lock types? If so does any one have any more
info? - I still have the Passenger door lock (My car is RHD), and can
easily photo this to send to any way one to help answer my question.

Thanks once again.

Ashley (Ash) #2M5504

PS I have some more questions to post at some point!

Re: Nice to meet you!

Ashley,

You might want to try Rimmer Bros or Moss (I think I've got links to
one or both on my site). I've found, in the past, that where these
parts overlap with cars they support they are usually pretty clued up
on which fit Marcos.

The reason I suggest these is that I've a feeling that the door catch
(which I think is what you mean, rather than the external lock, which
is MGB bootlid lock on a V4) was used on a TR (4 or 5, I suspect) as
well as, probably, numerous other Leyland group vehicles (or whatever
grouping was in existence at that time).

Good luck,

Mark

Re: Nice to meet you!

2002-02-05 by a5h_pm

Mark - nice to meet the man that has kept me going after all these
years!
Thanks for the info, I've jsut looked at the Rimmer Bros page, and to
my delight have found the door latch assembly in question! For all
those interested I founf that the TR6 has the same door latch
assembly, although the connecting rod will need to be extended. They
also use the saem internal door release handle someone earlier was
looking for. (the link to the image can be found at
www.rimmerbros.co.uk/tr6/images/144a.gif). Thanks once again for your
help!

I have another question I've just thought of (many more to come I'm
afraid). Where on the chassis would I have expected to see the VIN
number, as my does not have one anywhere! The current engine number
does however match the registration document.

Regards

Ash #2M5504

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Re: Nice to meet you!

2002-02-05 by Mike Denman

Hi Ash,
On the early cars including my 1966, the door locks are from an Austin A40. This includes the lock mechanism which is in the round push button, the round cylinder "cam" which is behind the push button and locks the door by rotating with the key and the hardware behind the cam that attaches to the rod that runs to the door interior handle on one side and to the striker plate on the other side and the striker plate itself. The only part from the Austin A40 that wasn't used was the exterior door handle itself (the Marcos has the door handle molded into the door edge). The other thing you need to know is that the door locks are different on the left side from the right side. One side is a "mirror image" of the other side, so they are not interchangeable although some of the parts are (very few actually). Interestingly, the interchange list on the web site only lists one part number i.e..BL 14A 4485. My receipt from Mr. Maslin doesn't list a part number at all and he didn't ask for one although he was concerned that I knew which model of Austin I was talking about. By the way, the 20 pounds I paid was only for the locks themselves, I had the rest of the mechanism. The trunk (boot) uses a MGB bezel but I am not sure about the lock itself. Later cars used a different type of lock on the doors but I am not sure when the switch to the new door locks took place. I will post a copy of the door locks diagram from the Austin A40 manual in the photo's section of the Marcos Maniacs Yahoo site (I'm not sure if this chat list will allow attachments).
Best regards,
Mike Denman

PS I have some more questions to post at some point!

Marcos is a 1966 model and it has the Austin A40 locks) and I am not
sure when Marcos changed to a different lock. I bought two locks for
my Marcos (with keys) for 20 pounds in 1997 from H. Maslin, 40 Neal
Road, West Kingsdown, Kent, TN156DF U.K.
> Telephone# 01474854005. Mr. Maslin specializes in Austins (not
Marcos) and has been in business for a long time. I have no idea if
he is still at the Neal road address but that is the last address I
have for him. I also have a diagram of the Austin lock from an Austin
manual but my scanner isn't working at the moment. Let me know if
you need the diagram I will find a way to scan it into the computer
and email it to you.

Re: Nice to meet you!

2002-02-14 by a5h_pm

Good Morning again,

Thanks once again for all your help with the door locks, problem now
pretty much solved! Some other quick questions, can anyone tell me if
on their cars, the door locks (MGB type), has a runner seal between
it and the door skin - likewise on the boot. Also the Windscreen
wiper spindle coerv to these have a rubber insulator of some sort?

Any one had anymore thoughts about my cars previous owners? the Reg
is TKN 164H chassis 2M5504 - pics are on my site www.molyneuxs.com

Cheers

Ash
