Bob,
I was aware of your wood chassis problem, but have not been in touch previously as I live in Florida and am not sure how easy it would be to help. Also I am 83 years old. ; I was the first person to purchase a Marcos
in 1959 and have always been interested in the wood chassis cars. My original Marcos has turned up in Clalifornia and is being restored by Paul Steinbeck. The 1961 Luton Gullwing is being restored by Larry Meadows in Tampa. I also have a wood chassis 3
litre in the UK which I restored some years ago. So I am
pretty conversant with these cars.
If the rot in your car is only restricted to the area where the sub frame mounts I would think it is a relatively easy repair. However if the rot is more widespread it would be a major job. The car I restored in the
UK was rebuilt with a new chassis, but unfortunately after I bought it I discovered several major problems. For example, when rebuilding a wood chassis car one needs to fit he fibreglas around the wood and fit the doors otherwise they never fit properly.
Also the Marcos has a problem in that the guy who made the right hand door would not speak to the one who made the left hand door and so they are completely different, even the window glasses are different shapes and
sizes.
Anyway you can always give me a call on 407 818 9090
Best wishes,
John Sutton

Subject: [MarcosManiacs] Woody GT Chassis? [1 Attachment]
[Attachment(s) from Bob Carroll included below]
I’ve been more of a lurker here for a long time since my 69 3000GT (#3-5366) came to me 15 years ago with a chassis that has rot issues – particularly where the front subframe mounts. I paid a price that was commensurate with the damage
being undisclosed. One of those buyer-beware situations.
I’ve heard tales before (and just recently) of sources for restoration of existing chassis and even new chassis being available. Anyone able to turn me on to such sources and give me an idea as to cost?
Thanks,
-Bob Carroll
