My 1600 GT making some progress.

My 1600 GT making some progress.

2014-07-28 by SIA@...

After far too many years my 1600 GT is finally nearly complete so far as major components being present.

When I got it the prior owners had paid to have a Mazzzda rotary engine and trans put in.

Worst engine conversion EVER!

It sat so far forward that much of the engine was ahead of the front wheels, the balance of the car had to be ruined.

Without "Engine braking" the rear brakes wore out PDQ, and so the Marcos sat for in a poor location for many years.

It's sat too long under my care as well, but at least it is inside and out of the damp.

I had plans to put an Alfa-Romeo 2000 and five speed into it, partly because they are relatively easy to find and not expensive.

it turns out that the Alfa trans is too big to fit a wood chassis very well.

So I found a Ford T9 box and began to make an adapter.

Then I found a second T9.

Finally decided that since the wood wonders are suddenly popular and gaining in value I should just make it nearly original.

Now I've finally located a "Kent" 1600 (711M) engine to build, along with a twin Weber manifold.

So now I have a "Correct" engine and nearly correct five speed OD trans.

I also recently restored a set of period correct Shelby "Cobra" 13" wheels to fit but I think they may be a bit narrow at only 5" wide.

I also have another set of 5.5" wheels I am going to try to have restored.

Now I'm after parts to build the engine and adapt the ex-Merkur T9 box.

Really need a set of chassis engine mounts in order to verify how the drive-train will fit.

The biggest and most expensive part I need will be a new front windscreen.

I'm going to insure that to the max when I buy it, I've had horrible luck with windscreens and English shipping companies!

When I ordered a new windscreen from England (a number of years ago) the windscreen cost $350, the box to ship it in cost me $300, shipping and insurance cost me another $300, and storage at the airport waiting for customs to inspect $100. The windscreen box was impressive.... triple walled outside box, then sprayed in foam and then a double walled inner box with more sprayed in foam around the windscreen wrapped in plastic. The windscreen arrived in perfect shape. The chap in England said he wouldn't sell and ship the windscreen without the special box... no exceptions. He also insured the windscreen for its full value.

There is a guy in Saratoga Springs NY who can mold one for you, if you have one you can send him that fits. Can be cracked, chopped or broken in a small spot. He did work on my 1965 1800 GT.
If your interested let me know and I will introduce him to you.

Rory sent me a new screen a few months ago. Delivery was quick to Canada, it was perfectly boxed and best of all it fit!!!

Curious on Windshields in the USA. Am I reading that right? A person in Florida can make glass windshields for a Marcos? I too need a windshield for my Marcos project. I will order two, from? just in case. What about shipping charges from the UK? It would be nice do to a group buy, problem would be to get them around the USA. I am in Southeastern Arizona. My project is finally moving along, at least the doors are starting to fit, and the latch assemblies appear to work. Sunroof is no more, "glassed in". I hope I can make an air conditioning system for the car.

Well, Arizona is actually close to Nevada.
Never heard of U.S made windscreens, wonder if they fit properly?

Not to be discouraging, but I have had 3 windscreens in the last 40 some years for my 1970 Marcos from the factory, and all have arrived safely however, I have had to reshape the opening to make each one fit the car. The three other cars I have restored all have different opening than mine and each other. There does not seem to be any consistancy with the fit.

My mistake, A person in Saratoga Springs New York, can make the Marcos windshields? Not Florida. Every car is different? I need to get the new windshield before I paint the car?

Its not surp-rising that some reshaping has to be done since every opening is slightly different. Ine was simply lengthening the flange very slightly in one corner so that the glass and gasket could fit snugly. When I priced out getting a custom built windshield versus ordering one from Rory, I was surprised at how reasonable I thought Rory’s price was – including shipping. Mind you, he was also sending lots of other parts. Don’t forget to order the pre-molded gasket and trim that locks it in place.

Seems some funds are now "In the mail".
So just how much IS a 1600 GT windscreen now?
I know that some Marcos have a heated screen option, $$$$
Seems odd that fitting is such an issue, the bodies were made from a mold and the glass should have also been consistent unless new molds were used each time?

Anyone ever compile a list of the correct woods and their placement for the wood chassis?
I need to repair mine and want to do it correctly.
Hopefully my winter project.
