Tire/Wheel sizes, etc

Hi all, I did a lot of looking before recently buying tires. I use the car for traveling to shows, races, etc. It is used basically for touring and maybe an occasional Solo event. I wanted to keep the original wheels so that limited my options. The original tires were 175SR13s' which have a diameter of 23.94", 5.0" tread and a section width of 7.0". I purchased 195/70HR13s' which have a diameter of 24.10", 6.1"of tread, and a section width of 7.9". As you can see the diameter increases a miniscule amount but the tread width on the road is 1.1" greater on EACH tire than before! The only place I could find "H" rated tires in this size was from Maxxis Tires. They fill the wheel wells very nicely as Mike Denman and Steve Spalding can attest (or look in the photo section). Mark Petrinovich has recently purchased the same tires for his. I don't know his satisfaction level, but I am very impressed with the handling characteristics and ride of these tires. The "70" series tires have more sidewall than the "60" or "50" series so the ride is a little less harsh and more friendly to the suspension components. Of course this is my personal choice for the planned usage of the car. If the wheels break or wear out I would probably go to 14" wire wheels as seen on Steve Spalding's Marcos (see photos). For all the different tire sizes and an excellent explanation of understeer/oversteer causes and solutions, check out www.rogerkrausracing.com and look under "technical" sheets. Lots of good stuff. My 2 cents for today. Don Lattimer #3M5759 V6 Willits, CA
