Parts Sources

2005-03-14 by midlifeclassics

I'm a newbie to this group and to Marcos' in general. So, if this
info is elswhere, please forgive my ignorance.

Anyway, I've just started digging into this '69 wood-chassis 3000
project, and inventorying necessary items. My question is that for
those of us in the U.S., where do you find parts for cars that were
never imported - like the ones shown in the parts list I found here -
for the Cortina, Zodiac and Vitesse? I know many of the usual
sources for the more common U.S. spec cars - even for my TVRs, but
if any of you could get me started in the right direction, I'm sure
it'll save me a lot of time and aggravation...and get another Marcos
back on the road that much faster.

Thanks in advance,
-Bob

Bob,
Welcome! Zodiac parts for the Essex V6 from TVRNA in Canada. Zodiac gearbox? Have fun.....Have to order from UK or have Garry Diver (Marcos Parts USA) get it for you. Shipping costs are outrageous!
Vitesse is the front suspension. Same as Triumph GT6. Roadster Factory, Victoria British, etc.
Cortina, try Dave Bean Engineering.
Some of us have spares also if you're in dire straits!

Thanks Don. I pulled all the hydraulics off over the weekend for inspection - and likely replacement. Haven't yet got the clutch slave off (waiting for the rust solvent to work), but I've found one on eBay that looks correct. Also found a new clutch master and a used brake master that should be rebuildable. I've already got rear slaves, but the front calipers look as bad as the masters and I'm looking for replacements. Unfortunately, I missed a set of rebuilds on eBay by about 5 minutes. They went for less than $90 each.
I wasn't too impressed with the condition of the wood at the rear of the chassis. All the vertical components look OK, but the bottom "slab" seems to have some issues.

Hi Bob
Hello from france (3/5344) , a wood chassis as yours that i use everyday
(except on snow!) .Good luck for your rebuilt .
Mine had the wood work rebuilt by MARCOS in 1985 .
I have rebuilt the gear linkage of the Zodiac gearboxe, it's perfect now, I
have also change the diff. for a 3.54 as i will fit a 3.1 tuned essex ( 200
cv with the 40 DFI 5).
If you need any advice, no problem.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Parts Sources

Thanks Lionel,
I'd love to know where you got the miscellaneous bushings for your shift linkage. There's not a single one in mine and the slop is horrible. I was figuring that I'd have to make my own, but if you know a source, that would be very helpful.
I'd love to have Marcos rebuild my woodwork, but that would mean shipping it back and forth across the atlantic. It isn't all that bad - mostly just some worn/rotted areas around the differential. But, I'm somewhat of a perfectionist and if it isn't right, It will always bother me.

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Parts Sources

In fact this wood chassis Marcos is my second Marcos.
I owned the first one (1970 steel chassis) in 1976. When I sold her a year
later( baby coming!), I kept a spare bush from the gearboxe and the original
keyfob (in case!!).
I sold my 3000ML tvr to bought this "new" Marcos. it's not possible to get
new bushes , a friend of mine made new ones in aluminium from my spare. The
main trouble I found on the gearboxe was the impossibility to correctly
engage rear and 3+4 gears. I stripped the all linkage to find missing clips
everywhere. Now it's perfect. I took away the switch inhibitorfor the
overdrive, i have now an overdrive 2nd gear ( i fit a small lamp between the
2 indicators on the panel to remember the overdrive before selecting rear
gear...). I fit a small push button on the steering wheel, it easier to cut
the overdrive between changing of gear , you get greater pleasure and
acceleration).
Be careful with the woodwork around the axle, it's a very important part of
the chassis with a lot of stress ( rory advices not to fit polybushes for
the axle anti tramp bars ecause of the stress to the rear part of the
chassis).
Have you got the "ZODIAC" manual? if you need i may mail the chapter on the
gearboxe and O.V.

Lionel,

That's good information to start with. Yes, I would appreciate an
excerpt from the Zodiac manual. I still need to find one. If you can
give me specifics on which model/year etc - or even a specific manual to
look for, then I can start searching for one of my own.

It feels like I can get the tranny into every gear, but it takes some
effort and searching. Looking at the linkage, I don't see a single
bushing anywhere - just big holes with little pins and lots of slop.

As for the woodwork, I am a bit concerned about the bottom panel that
goes under the rear axle. It's eaten away in a few places. There's no
way I can get this car back to England for repairs, so any pointers on
repairing that section would be very helpful. Also, any info on where
to find new rear bushings (where the "trailing" arms mount to the
chassis) would help.

Re: Parts Sources

Bob,

My shift linkage was the same as yours. I went to the local
hardware store and got bushings that fit. Mostly teflon but some
brass. Works great now.

I got my rear end bushings from Marcos Heritage Spares a few years
ago. I would suggest you make a list of parts you need and submit
it to Garry Diver. He is the US supplier for MHS. Some stuff you
can only get from MHS.
