V4 to V6 transplant

V4 to V6 transplant

2004-07-05 by Ash

Good day guys, sorry it's been so long since I last posted!

Well, as a few of you are aware I am still in the process of restoring my Marcos Ford V4 as a Ford V6. This weekend after many delays I finally did the first dry run of fitting the engine and gearbox in place. All my measuring seemed to pay off with the engine fittted squarely onto the new mounts.

Now for the problems.......

- The oil filter no longer fits and would foul with the chssis upright (supporting the back of the near side LHD upper wishbone).
- The Water pump had to be removed as it would interfer with both the steering assembly and the off side chassis upright (supporing the back of the upper wish bone.
- The Offside forward exhaust port will not have sufficient clearance between the cylinder head and steering assembly to fit the exhaust manifold.
- The bonnet has only limited clearance with the top of the carb (with out a pancake filter fitted)

Now the observant among you will no doubt have spotted the problem already......

Let's go back a little bit to give you some history.
The car was originally fitted with a Ford Essex V4 engine, and Ford 2000E `bullet' box. Having spoken with various people it was determine that it would be possible to leave the existing gearbox mounts (and prop shaft length) as they are. The result of this is that the Ford Essex V6 engine would sit further forward.

......ok back to now, having successfully fitted the engine and gearbox to the car, I finally packed up for the evening (10:45pm!) and went inside, the next morning I happen to find a couple of pictures which Dom Lattimer had previously sent me in answer to my question about exhaust manifolds. And what should I notice!

......The engine sitting considerably further back than mine is now sitting! Of course this would solve all of my problems listed above.

OK guys I now could do with your help, are there any of you out there who know that your car has been converted from V4 to V6? Could you please send me any pics you may have of the engine position, and also what gearbox is being used etc. Do you have any `indentations' in the chassis to give clearance for the bellhousing? Ang measurements and engine/gearbox mounting positions available (this also applies to existing V6 owners please).

As you can probably tell I went from great joy to great depression this weekend, so any help any one can offer would be appreciated.

Also if there are any V6 owners in the UK in the herts/bucks area that would allow me to come and take lots of pictures/measurements then please get in contact!

Thanks guys once again......

Ash,

I have an indentation in the frame on the left-hand frame rail so
that the bellhousing will clear the frame. I have the 3-rail 4
speed with OD. I'll get you some measurements.

Don!
Could you tell me what make and part number the oil filter for a Marcos w/ Ford V6 3L Essex should be? Any substitutes?

Hi Pat,
The 3ltr v6 filter is FRAM PH2857A, you should be able to cross that at
any good parts store.
