Restoring 1600 GT

Restoring 1600 GT

2003-01-31 by pverdeyen <pverdeyen@yahoo.com>

I am in the process of restoring my '68 1600 GT and whereas I can at
least attempt most of the tasks, I am stumped by the structure and
replacement of the internal workings of the pull down windows. Mine
have rotted completely and I wondered if anybody had either
drawings, information or could advise a supplier of this structure?
Has it been purloined from another car or was it a Marcos-Own
produced item??
Any help gratefully received

Hi Paul,

I'd speak to Rory McMath at Marcos Heritage if you can't get the information
elsewhere. Rory has been around since the very early cars, so he probably
knows the information off the top of his head. He may even be able to supply
what you need though his prices tend to be a bit steep.

2003-01-31 by Jan M Larsen

Hi Paul

I got a friend who have a 1967 1600 GT. I can take some pictures of the
inside of the doors and mail them if
you are interested? (It's the # 5183 car on the Maniac homepage, - maybe it
should be corrected some day, -
it's now owned by Niels Christoffersen, Denmark)

P.S. Talking about heights? I am 190 cm ( = 6'4" ?) so when racing classics
I am sitting with my crash helmet
touching the roof, even the pedals are at max + and the steering wheel is
small, - and then watch me crawling
in and out... but imagine my smile when I am in the seat...

Hi Paul,
The windows are fairly straight forward. The frames are aluminum and held together by 5:40 thread screws (for the most part) the window channel is lined by a strip of cotton (originally) webbing that Rory sells. The new webbing is nylon (?) The top of the window channel is lined by a strip of felt. The triangle fixed window in the front of the frame (Like a vent window except it doesn't open) has a thin piece of rubber on each side of the glass before it is slipped into place. The rear of the window has a piece of ribbed aluminum (cosmetic) that encases a piece of plywood (spacer) that is slipped into place. The bottom of the window channels go into the doors and have a slight bend at the bottom. these channels are fastened into place by screws at the bottom to a piece of really thin angle and then to plywood fiberglassed to the bottom inside of the door. The window channel is also fastened to the top of the door by brackets. The front bracket is an aluminum angle and the rear bracket is slightly more complicated. The windows are specific to Marcos. My car has glass windows but some cars have Plexiglas. I think the cars came with glass originally. That is about it. If you will email me your address (off line) and any specific questions that you might have I will try to answer them and will send photos of the windows in my 1966 Marcos 1800 chassis # 4079.

Hi Jan,
I'm afraid I am the person that hasn't corrected the owners name on the Marcos web site. I took over the Marcos Maniacs web site from Jeff Caraway about the same time as I moved into a new house and haven't done much with it as a result. (The web site is now at www.marcosmaniacs.com which is one thing I did do) I am keeping a list of the updates I need to do and will add this one to the list.

Hi Mike
Don't worry, take your time, I am building house and new garage at the moment so I know how it is, - I guess my racing
in the Marcos this year will be on a lower level, but I can't stay away from the track. Some racing is better than no racing.
Though I still hope to ;report a little from the races now and then.

Hello Paul
I am sure that the spring loaded riser for the windows are Marcos specific.
I would also suspect that Rory at Marcos Heritage would not be able to supply them, except for perhaps a very high price.
I do how ever think that some one out there will have what you require, as most of the competition people I understand remove them to reduce weight.
My advice would be, place an advertisement in the wanted.
Any other questions please ask every one is waiting with there own bit of hard earned experience. Good hunting,
Regards Jac.

Thanks Jan
Fortunately I know what it looks like as the driver's side is
reasonably intact and I can probably get a pattern from the original
one if I collect up all the pieces.

Thanks Jac
I have to agree with everybody on the site that although Rory can
help, he does seem to be very expensive. I bought a pair of front
bumpers last year and ended up with a couple of pieces of fibreglass
with no fixings, indeed really nothing more than something I could
have cobbled together myself AND paid £35 each for them!!!
Thanks to everybody for their responses; I know enough people here
in the Midlands to be able to get somebody to fabricate a mechanism
for me.
I'll keep you posted
Regards

Paul
