Essex 3L

2002-07-15 by goldrivervic

For all you knowledgeable maniacs,

I am trying to find out the normal differential ratio for the Ford
Essex 3L and what ratio do you think that I have if at 70 mph the
revs are approx 4200

Also I have heard that you can buy a new 3L Essex engine [fuel
injection]which is made in South Africa. Does anybody know details??

Regards

Vic

Vic,
Mine is a 3.77 to 1 Cortina rear. I've seen different articles and
write-ups with 3.2:1, 3.6:1, etc. Don't know exactly but if you have
185/70R13 tires your ratio works out to 4.2:1 ??. I assume you were not
in overdrive?

Try this link and put in your numbers: need to know tire height.

I figured mine out by placing a mark on the driveshaft and measuring how
many turns it went for one revolution of the rear wheel. Or pull the
rear and count the teeth (not fun).

I've heard that Essex thing myself. I think from the Land Rover guys
who use them as a great engine swap (lots of torque).
