FW: Marcos Glass

2002-06-20 by Jeff Caraway

Hi All,
Here is the answer I received from Marcos Heritage regarding Marcos
glass.

It appears that both the front and back glass will fit all models (with
some work). It also appears that Rory can supply them as well.
Should we now contact both Pilkington and Rory to get a price
comparison?

Dear Jeff Caraway,

Thank you for your e-mail. Sorry for the delay in replying, we are
extremely busy at the moment!

Regarding the glass situation, the screens are copyright.

All federal cars that went to the States in 1970 . 1971 were fitted with
glass rear screens. The glass rear screen was introduced in the late
1970's and I have seen them fitted in an 1800 and a later 3ltr. The
glass rear screens should fit the other cars, but we cannot guarantee
it. As you can imagine the cars are all different and they can vary
quite a bit.

The front screens are the same for all models, and the heated screens
were introduced in 1988 / 89.

If you are interested in a quantity of glass, we can do you a very
favourable deal.

Please advise what sort of thing you require, and we can get some prices
to you.

Kind Regards

Rory
Marcos Heritage.

Jeff,

Marcos Heritage want 375 pounds for a front screen that cost me 159 pounds
through the Marcos Owners Club. I'm curious to know what the comparable
costs of a glass rear screen are, though I shudder at the thought. It brings
to mind the cost of toilet seats for the US Military.

Rory states in his reply that the screens are copyright. Who holds the
copyright and is it still current. It may be that pilkintons cannot
supply glass to us directly without infringing these copyrights and if
so our only alternative would be to buy through marcos heritage. I do
not know how the club managed to get their own supply of screens if this
is the case. Rory used to advertise a 20% discount to marcos owners club
members but this message seems to have disappeared from his recent
adverts. Does anyone know if he still offers this discount.

Well.... Why don't we tally up everyone involved, get a quantity of both
fronts and backs that we will need, then we can price them at both
places.
Rory did say he would be willing to give a discount for a larger
quantity, so it might be worthwhile to get him to run the numbers.
Also, we could possibly get the window moldings from Rory at the same
time.

Later today, I'll try and tally up everyone's want list and post back to
the list with names and quantities so that we make sure no one is left
out.

Paul . . .
Be sure to compare apples vs apples. To the 159 pounds, one must add the crating & shipping costs, plus the cost of all the telephone calls to Colin, plus the cost of going to the customs warehouse to get the crate and truck it to Aurora. Not to mention the almost one year it took to actually get the windscreens.
What is included in the Marcos Heritage price? Or, what more do you have to pay on top of the 375 pounds to get a windscreen in your garage?

All,

Personally, I'd be extremely skeptical of a claim of copyright. I don't see
how the screens could have been sold through the Marcos Owners Club if that
was the case. The screen are an extremely profitable item for Marcos
Heritage and I'd take their claim with a pinch of salt.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] FW: Marcos Glass

2002-06-20 by McCubbin, David

I suspect that copyright was never an issue until now that Rory owns the
company - no disrespect to Rory - He has made an investment and wants to get
his investment plus, back. Until one sees documentation I think it's fair to
assume the suggestion of copyright is a means of protecting his turf (and
profits)

I, too, would be skeptical of the design actually being copyrighted at this
time, although it probably could be done. (Caterham went down this road with
Westfield over design of the Westfield seven and won.)

However you must be prepared for the possibility that if Pilkington is
Rory's supplier, they may have an obligation not to undercut one of their
agents.

FW: Marcos Glass

2002-07-02 by Jeff Caraway

Hi All,

I received a reply from Marcos Heritage regarding glass pricing.

I have attached their letter below.

I went with 5 fronts and 10 rears as our estimate. I was happy to see that they do indeed carry the Perspex rears.

It looks like the glass converts to:

Rear Glass Screens $345.00 each

Front glass $452.00 each

Rear Perspex $145.00 each

;

It sounds as if we would be facing an additional 3216.00 (worst case for 10 glass rears-see below) to get them shipped to ONE destination here in the US. I think that we will also have to pay some type of customs charges as well. I’m not sure what they would run, but I would guess the customs would be a few hundred dollars.

Then we would incur more shipping to part them out and send them to their individual destinations.

I guess we need to go ahead and contact Pilkingtons (sp?) to get an estimate from them. Lee can you do that?

Although, I’m not sure how we would estimate shipping with this method. I guess we could have Pilkingtons estimate it for shipping them to one US location as Rory did.

I’m very disappointed by what I have found so far as the shipping will add so much to it that it probably will not be viable for most.

Although, there is still the hope of getting Perspex rears from Hayes (which I am still pursuing) and maybe getting someone in the US or Canada to do some front screens (which I would like for Paul to pursue with the place in Canada once he gets some time).

Please LMK what everyone thinks.

Jeff

We can supply rear glass or perspex ( lexan / polycarbonate ) screens.

We carry perspex screens in stock at £95.00 Each.

We can supply glass at the following prices:

10 x Rear Glass Screens ( Retail £350.00 ) £225.00 Each

5 x Front Glass Screens ( Retail £375.00 ) £295.00 Each

In all honesty the perspex screens are a definate fit because they are supplied oversize as opposed to the glass rear screens.

Regarding the shipping, it would be much cheaper to send the screens to one destination.

We would have to pack them in batches of 5. And you would be looking at around £200.00 to have each batch of 5 screens professionally crated ( our shippers insist on this ) - in all £600 for crating.

To ship the screens ( 3 boxes ) to North America is going to cost

in the region of £1500.00. The 3 boxes volumetrically work out at approx 840kg therefor making a very expensive shipping cost.

I have quoted for "worst case scenario " - i.e everybody wanting glass rear screens.

To ship a quantity of perspex screens would be a lot less - i.e to ship 5 perspex screens would cost £200 - £300.

Jeff . . .
Paul Dransfield and I had an article in Torque magazine issue 81, on our windscreen replacements. The shipper that we used was:
Stan Hilton
Partimex Trading International
Unit 14, Wilds Yard, Station Road
Cullompton, Devon
EX15 1BQ
England
telephone: (0) 1884 35522
Cost for 2 windscreens: pickup from Pilkington Glass, crating to ensure the screens would withstand the stresses of shipping, transportation in a container via ship from Exeter to Toronto: 262 pounds.
Incidentally, sundry costs for brokers fees, warehouse fees, and Canadian taxes: CDN$226.

Hi Jeff,
It's taken a while but I finally had some time to shop around for windscreens last Saturday. Unfortunately I haven't had any success so far but my best bet closed at noon, 5 minutes before I arrived, so I will have to try again next Saturday. I didn't realize until I actually went out on my quest that most of the automobile glass shops around me aren't even open on the weekend. I'll definitely get an answer one way or another by this time next week.

5 x Front Glass Screens ( Retail 375.00 ) 295.00 Each

In all honesty the perspex screens are a definate fit because they are supplied oversize as opposed to the glass rear screens.

Regarding the shipping, it would be much cheaper to send the screens to one destination.

We would have to pack them in batches of 5. And you would be looking at around 200.00 to have each batch of 5 screens professionally crated ( our shippers insist on this ) - in all 600 for crating.

To ship the screens ( 3 boxes ) to North America is going to cost

in the region of 1500.00. The 3 boxes volumetrically work out at approx 840kg therefor making a very expensive shipping cost.

I have quoted for "worst case scenario " - i.e everybody wanting glass rear screens.

To ship a quantity of perspex screens would be a lot less - i.e to ship 5 perspex screens would cost 200 - 300.

Site update and Marcos for sale!

2002-08-19 by Jeff Caraway

Hi All,
I just wanted to let everyone know that I have finally gotten around to
making some long overdue site updates.
The registry keeps growing (thanks to all those that have submitted
their information), the new Marcos Engineering site has been linked in
along with a picture of the new Marcosite TS250.

http://www.greyraven.tzo.com/MarcosManiacs/

Please be sure to check out the classifieds. You'll find that a Marcos
has come up for sale stateside.
That's right, I have decided to sell my 1984 2.8 liter GT for personal
reasons. Please check it out on the site and email me in private at
DovenWolf@... if you are interested in learning more about
the car.

Enjoy!

Best Regards,
Jeff

RE: [MarcosManiacs] FW: Marcos Glass

2002-08-19 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Hi again guys,
I finally managed to talk to the manager at the local Standard Auto Glass, one of the auto glass chains in Canada, and the chain that secured my replacement screen locally in 1976. He thought there was a good chance that the local windshield manufacturer (which is now owned by Pilkington) might be persuaded to make the Marcos screens locally, particularly if they were wanted in quantity, but he was going to make some enquiries before getting anyone's hopes up too high.
If this was to happen, one of the requirements would be to have someone supply a front and rear screen for use in the making of molds. Now I have to be honest and say I would be very reluctant to let them have my car for that purpose, having waited nearly 2 years to have the last front screen replaced. Knowing how valuable they are, it would be asking for trouble to have someone remove, do God knows what with during the mold making process and then replace, two perfectly good pieces of glass. However, Dave Barton from Guelph in southern Ontario was, if I recall correctly, one of the guys wanting replacements screen and if he could supply his old ones for the mold making process, that would seem to me to be a more realistic solution.
Until I get a positive response from Standard it's a moot point, but something to think about. Comments Dave?
I'll post the response as soon as I hear.

Subject: [MarcosManiacs] FW: Marcos Glass

Jeff

Hi Dave,

That would be great and a relief. I don't know what process is used for
constructing molds but I wouldn't discount using a plexi screen for that
purpose until I've spoken with the manufacturer. Let's hope they're willing
to undertake the project and for a reasonable price.

Jeff,
I'll gladly run the mailing list if all agree. Doesn't look to hard to swap it over. I'd love to run the website also but I'm not quite in a position to do it. Don't have the server nor the expertise required. Wish I did!
Please let me knw what is involved as "owner" of the list. Thanks.

Hi All,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have finally gotten around to making some long overdue site updates.

The registry keeps growing (thanks to all those that have submitted their information), the new Marcos Engineering site has been linked in along with a picture of the new Marcosite TS250.

http://www.greyraven.tzo.com/MarcosManiacs/

Please be sure to check out the classifieds. You’ll find that a Marcos has come up for sale stateside.

That’s right, I have decided to sell my 1984 2.8 liter GT for personal reasons. Please check it out on the site and email me in private at DovenWolf@carolina.rr.com if you are interested in learning more about the car.

Enjoy!

Best Regards,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I'm sorry to hear you're selling your car. It must have been a difficult
decision.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the glass company about the windshields
and I'm planning on making a follow-up call today. In the meantime, I
haven't received any emails through the group for two or three weeks now and
I was wondering if I have been inadvertently dropped from the mailing list
or if my company has somehow filtered out the email from Yahoo. I certainly
cannot access our Yahoo site from here because access is blocked. Could you
send me a direct email response regarding the mailing list because I'd like
to figure out a way around the problem.

Thanks,

Subject: [MarcosManiacs] Site update and Marcos for sale!

Hi All,
I just wanted to let everyone know that I have finally gotten around to
making some long overdue site updates.
The registry keeps growing (thanks to all those that have submitted their
information), the new Marcos Engineering site has been linked in along with
a picture of the new Marcosite TS250.

Please be sure to check out the classifieds. You'll find that a Marcos has
come up for sale stateside.
That's right, I have decided to sell my 1984 2.8 liter GT for personal
reasons. Please check it out on the site and email me in private at
DovenWolf@... <mailto:DovenWolf@...> if you are
interested in learning more about the car.

Enjoy!

Best Regards,
Jeff
