has got it right. The Mantis has the same sort of separate header tank
which serves as the high point for the system. The top of the rad is
noticeably lower than the top of the engine block.

I believe the small tank is known as a header tank. It's purpose is to
provide a high point in the system for fillling the cooling system and
allowing air to escape during filling. This is used where the rad is too low
to allow air to be removed successfully from the system in the situation
where the pressure cap/inlet is on the rad itself, and the cap/inlet is
lower than some sections of the cooling system ( ie hoses and coolant
passages in the engine block). I don't know if there is any other purpose
for this tank.
