Time to say goodbye to the Marcos?

2014-06-10 by edddunkin@...

So it's come to the point in my life and journey with the Marcos, where I need to spend some cash and a lot of time to get her finally onto the road, however in the next five years I can see that I'll have neither.

She's a red, 1969 (H reg - so UK road tax exempt) Ford 3L, V6, Steel chassis car, who failed the UK MOT test in 1981 for having rust in the chassis and shot front trunnions. Since then she's had a full body off rebuild, complete rebuild of the chassis, as it was pretty much all shot, during the rebuild we've tried to reuse as many of the original parts as possible but replace where needs must and for safety and Rory has been fantastic at sourcing rubber components, such as the handbrake biasing block and oil seals for the rear differential (Mk1 Zepher it turns out).

So the state were at she's running with the body on, pretty much everything mechanical is working, I think we've only got the heater fan and ducting to fit in the engine bay. Most of the electrical systems are working and we've finally got the dynamo charging the battery (regulator problem). But she's got a long way still to go, she needs a re-spray, some of the gel coat is failing in places and it's a constant battle to keep on top of things, she needs new carpets (I think we've still got the originals to make templates from), a little bit more electrical work needs doing before she would be ready to go to UK MOT. To get her into a good looking condition we've estimated it will cost another £3000 to £4000 and probably about a months worth of effort, I should point out that my chief mechanic (father) is now 85 and has trouble getting into the car.

So I think it's probably fair to the car to admit that if I hold onto her for another five years, she will be in a poor state, it's sad to say that as were so close to seeing her on the road but I just don't have the time or funds. So before I put her on general sale and as the forum (especially Larry and his excellent photos) has been so good to me with advice over the past ten years, would anyone be interested in her, but is will only sell to a good home, I don't really want to deal with any dealers. I've no idea really how much she's worth but looking around it seems that most road worthy cars go for £18,000 or so, so I'm thinking that she has to be worth £14,000. If anyone is interested then drop me a line and by the way she's located in Salisbury, England (SP2 area to be precise).
