RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: More Wiper motor/ gearing questions..... Please help!!!!

2001-10-29 by Jeff Caraway

Hi All,
Just thought I'd give everyone an update on my wiper mess.
I spent a LOT of time this weekend, but it is finally fixed!
I ended up taking out the entire wiper mechanism to get it to work
though.
It seems that the tubes the leadscrew runs through were a bit bent. The
middle one was tight enough as it is, so the bends didn't help much.
After some straightening and much greasing (of everything involved!),
they seem to be working like a charm now.
BTW, the 120 degree gear is very important, as the wipers now cover the
correct amount of windshield and the automatic wiper park works.

So, for the record I now know that Marcos wiper systems contain:
Lucas 14W motor (motor internals are the same no matter application)
A 120 degree gear (special for Marcos-don't know of any other
applications at this time).

I also became very intimate with my dash, dash wiring, switches, gages,
and other odd bits I accidentally broke along the way!
Anyway, I was able to get her on the road a little, and I must say.
Marcos are not like anything else I've ever driven!

Now. on to the reverse lights..

Happy Marcosing,
Jeff Caraway

Another point about British wiper systems is that the leadscrew that
drives them usually only runs against half of the gear on the wiper
post. Over the years the gear teeth can become worn and sloppy. It
is possible to position the drive gear in each wiper post to use the
other half/side, which should be in excellent condition provided the
wiper lead screw cable and wiper motor have not been removed and
reinsalled by a previous owner. Remove the wipers from the
windscreen then from inside the dash remove the two screws that hold
the rear plate on the wiper post. You should be able to pull the
leadscrew cable and cable tubes out enough to spin the wiper posts
180 degrees then reassemble. Its worth a try?

My experience with the Sprite/Midget wiper systems has taught me that
they are not worth the junk they are made from. They, IMHO are to
small and not built heavy enough. The average wiper on a Sprite is 7
inches long and are very light, and about a 90 degree arc. The
Marcos has a longer leadscrew, and larger/heavier wiper blades and
arms along with a heavier tension spring to hold the wipers against
the windscreen. I think I will stick witht the manual system of
shutting off the wipers until I can identify and locate the proper
degree wheel for the motor in my car. When I go to British car shows
I always look at the wiper motors in the various cars and to date
have not seen the type of motor used in my car. The closest I saw so
far was in a Jag 12 cylinder sedan Series 3.
