SV: [MarcosManiacs] Volvo overdrive 4 spd box

2004-02-09 by Jan M Larsen

Hi Maniacs...

I must say that I never had any problems using Volvo (M41) overdrive
gearboxes in my Volvos (Amazon)121 and 122S with B18 or B20 engines (I
haven't tried a B30 sofar but there it's probably best with the stronger
M410). All of my gearboxes are used and have never been renovated and
normally it's the gearbox that get's worn first, not the overdrive. But of
course a renovated will be a good thing to have. I had only a few problems
with the overdrive but normally it just drive and drive. I can recommend
using the clutch when changing in and out of the overdrive, it will spare
the internal clutch in the overdrive. There are two M41 type used in the
Volvo 121/122 and P1800/1800. The newer one has a little bit lower gearing
than the old type but should be stronger, probably the axel is a little
thicker, also used in the Volvo 142/144.
I have used M41 overdrives with both Volvo B20E engines and raced classic
racing with my Volvo 122S with more than 130 horsepowers with no troubles.
But with more than 150-160 horsepowers it's probably a good idea with a
M410. Volvo did start out to use the M410 in the first Volvo 1800E but soon
changed to M41, probably they also found out that it was overkill with the
M410 and the 124 horsepower B20E. Actually I think the gearbox has a harder
job in a heavy Volvo than in a light Marcos, so I wouldn't be worried about
using an overdrive in my Marcos, and it's so pleasant to use and comfortable
to drive with.
By the way the last Volvo 142/144/145, the last 1800ES (maybe also the last
1800E) and the first Volvo 242/245 from around 1974-75 with B20 used the
M45/M46 gearbox so that's the bellhouse to go for if anyone want to use that
(stronger than M41) gearbox.
Just my two cent...

Thanks for bringing this to the attention of the group, Donny. It gives me
the opportunity to divest the results of my findings after I looked into the
use of an overdrive gearbox with the B30 engine. The first one that because
available to me was from the Volvo 144, a 4 cylinder sedan. I spoke with a
number of people about the suitability of this combination and was told that
that gearbox was substantially less resiliant than the M410 from the Volvo
164. I actually had the unit in my possession when I located a M410 and was
able to compare the two. It was immediately apparent that the 144
gearbox/overdrive unit had a thinner drive shaft and the gearbox was
smaller. I don't know what the actual overdrive unit was but the gearbox
didn't look up to the job, especially on a Marcos. Based on what I found, I
wouldn't recommend anyone using a 4 cylinder overdrive gearbox in the Volvo
Marcos.

Is anyone interested in a Volvo M46 overdrive gearbox? I was at a
local salvage yard which is getting ready to crush a 1980 Volvo (4
cylinder) with 78,000 miles. They want $300.00 for the gearbox
complete from bellhousing to driveshaft flange, including shifter w/
overdrive switch. I don't know if this box fits any of the Volvo-
powered Marcos cars, but I thought I would bring this to the groups
attention in light of all the recent rear axle/transmission
questions. This message is not intended to be an advertisement, but
only to assist group members in finding a solution to some issues
recently raised. Reply or contact me offline so I can relay
information to you. I think it may only be around a few more days.
