RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: New "Car of the Month"

Don . . .
My Mantis thanks you for its 15 minutes of fame.
At long last we are getting some reasonable weather up here in Ontario, and Saturday saw the first British Car show of the season, in London, Ontario. The Mantis was in fine tune for its first lengthy outing of the year - 120 miles from here to London in 2 hours flat, on largely deserted 2-lane back roads posted at 50 MPH, with several towns and villages along the route where it's prudent to at least flip off the overdrive in observance of their 30 MPH signs. At the show, the Mantis was in the "Orphans" class (where else?), and came second in the popular vote to a beautiful and immaculate Morgan, but beating out a freshly restored Lotus in third.
For several years now, the Mantis has had a sort-of howling noise that increased with speed. I had assumed that it was the tires, which have a rather aggressive all-weather tread. Well, it was the rear axle bearings - having replaced them last month, the car now glides along in comparative silence. I guess we tend to automatically adjust to things that deteriorate slowly over the years. However, those with 30+ year old rear axle bearings might we well advised to check the play in the bearings, particularly if they're hearing increased "tire noise".

Regards . . . Ron McLeod

With the intro of the Marcos TS500 I've put the factory picture of
the car on the homepage. I will leave it until the end of June and
then return Ron's car to the spotlight.
