Hi group,
The rear axle bearings and
seals..... lets start with the rear axle housing... my housing has a flange
(essentially a washer) which is slightly larger than the axle diameter welded to
the axle housing on the differential end. The purpose of this flange is to keep
most of the oil out of the axle tubes and off your rear brake shoes. In
addition, the outer axle bearing has a seal for the same purpose. In addition,
the rear axle retainers (basically large steel donuts that are pressed onto the
axle to keep the axle in place) will also help keep the oil out. From my
understanding, some of the axle housings lack the inner "washer/
flange" but one could be made and welded in
easily enough. It would probably take awhile for the oil to reach the rear brake
shoes through normal driving if the seals were missing or bad. The seals were
bad on my car when I originally purchased it as I found out by parking the car
sideways on a hill.... the down hill side had a puddle of rear end oil by the
rear tire the next day. One problem to be aware of is that some (all?) the
bearing retainers are not the correct thickness which will prevent the axles
from being installed correctly. The retainers can be "fixed" if you have access
to a lathe. So, be sure and check the new retainers against the old retainers
before you press the new retainers onto your axles.

Looks like I will get to do a side-by-side comparison test, as I have one of each. My plan is to find some good twisty roads this summer, get that oil sloshing back-and-forth, and see what happens.Regards . . . Ron McLeod

When I restored the frame on my Marcos the rear end was stripped
down and had new bearings put in it , I probably got them from the
same place as you, on Woody Rd in Oakville ,right?
; I think the reason for a seal is so that any rear end oil that
might find its way to the end of the axle tube does not get out and
all over the brakes.......the bearings I got did not have a lip seal
but were a tight fit also, I don't think gear oil could get by them
