Thanks. Looks like I will get to do a side-by-side comparison test,
as I have one of each. My plan is to find some good twisty roads this
summer, get that oil sloshing back-and-forth, and see what
happens.

When I restored the frame on my Marcos the rear end was stripped
down and had new bearings put in it , I probably got them from the
same place as you, on Woody Rd in Oakville ,right?
I think the reason for a seal is so that any rear end oil that
might find its way to the end of the axle tube does not get out and
all over the brakes.......the bearings I got did not have a lip seal
but were a tight fit also, I don't think gear oil could get by them
