Hi Bill,
I think most owners use whatever
is available since the cables that are used on Marcos cars are basically the
same as those used on motorcycles, snow mobiles etc. I have used bicycle
hand brake cables (cheap but a little on the light side although I have
never had one break) Currently I am using a cable from a Japanese motorcycle.
The important considerations are the cable size (diameter), the housing size
(diameter) and the length. Buy a cable and housing that is longer than you need
and cut to size. A Dremel tool with a "cut off abrasive disc" works great for
cutting both the cable and the housing. You don't want to use a pair of diagonal
cutters (wire cutters, dykes) to cut the cable since it will spread and fray the
ends which makes it almost impossible to get the cable Back through the
fittings. The best way I have found to cut the cable is to wrap the cable with
tape over the cut point and then use the dremel to cut through the tape and the
cable. The tape will melt/burn but will still keep the cable strands in place.
After cutting SLIDE the tape off the cable. Sliding works better than
trying to unwrap the tape which disturbs the cable strands. If your housing is
o.k. then you can buy the internal cable from the better hardware stores or from
West Marine the boat accessory supplier. Dave Bean Engineering (209 754-5802
also sells a throttle cable kit that will work, part # 100L 4600. If you order
from Dave Bean you will need to know the length of the cable since the kit is
sold by the foot.
