Hey gang, I guess that I'll enter the lock debate
at this point. I have already purchased a new pair of door handle locks for my
Marcos, and after reading all of the debate, checked out whay my car uses.
I bought the wrong handles/locks! (sounds like the
same ones Ashley got). I ordered mine from Victoria British to fit the rear
hatch of a MGB-GT. Under the finger-pull, there is indeed a "lobe" at the
mounting surface. My originals are round. A local locksmith charged $5.00 to
re-key a perfect orignal MG take-off and two new locks I purchased. Now it seems
I will have to use my originals or grind off the "lobe" and use the new
ones.
Another difference between the original Marcos
locks and the MG locks is the length of the finger-pull. They both look almost
identical until you compare them side by side. The MG ones are about 1/4 inch
longer on the finger pull ;projection.
Now I have a related question I would like to
figure out. The door on my car is flush
or straight where the door lock mounts, except for about a 3/16" recess for
the lock. When I was at Hayes Harris's shop looking at the various Marcos cars
(Jeff Caraway's, yellow 3 liter Volvo automatic, and my red V-4), I noticed all
the cars but mine have a "scallop" bulge in the door skin where the lock is
fitted. Does anyone else have a flush or straight doorskin around the lock? I'll
try to get some pictures posted!

Sorry I've not replied sooner, I've been away on business.
Any way, you are quite right that the recess on my doors is perfectly
round and that the original MGB boot locks were also completely round
(I refer of course to the base of the locks here). The new locks
which I purchased from Marcos Heritage (all using the same key!), do
not have a completely round base, instead they have a lobe whcih is
positioned just below the latch part of the lock, if you take a look
on www.mossmotors.com and selct MGB then rear body fittings, (the
link is http://www.mossmotors.com/cgi-
bin/db2www/mossmotors/MossUSA/Shop/ViewProducts.mac/report?
T=32679&ModelID=31000&PlateID=2522 ), you will see a picture of the
odd shaped washer (compete with lobe - sorry I can not think of a
more suitable word!). As I mentioned I was able to saw/file these off
very easily to produce the original round shape! I will be back with
my car again in about 10days so I will picture the old and new locks
so you can better understand the problem. The boot of course does not
need to have this files since it mounts to a flat surface.
Sorry for any confusion I may have caused!
My next dilema is whether or not to replace the wiring loom witha new
one - I am being quoted £240 to have one made up from the original
plans, the only modification being wiring for an alternator instead
of a dynamo. How does this sound to you guys? any experience of doing
this or any problems with your old looms so to speak?
Regards
Ashley
PS Mike if you are reading this, many thanks for the copy of the
manual which arrived today, please do let me know if you want
anything for this or if you need any help getting stuff for you your
car from the UK!?
