Blower for hot air solder??

Blower for hot air solder??

2005-01-28 by gettingalongwouldbenice

I had the good fortune to snag a Leister Labor S7B
hot air wand. It needs external air. Near as I can
tell from the specs and my experiments is that I need
about 6CFM at 7PSI for maximum utility. I could probably
get by on a third of that flow for normal soldering use.
My best small centrifugal blower gives me about 10% of
the flow I want.

Has a 10 foot 1/2" air hose with a power cable running up
the center. There's a lot of back pressure, so
something like a hair-dryer blower has almost zero
flow.

Of course, I can take it out into the garage and use it
with the air compressor. But I'd like to have it usable
inside. Short of a vacuum cleaner, any suggestions on how to
build a blower that can handle a little back pressure?
Can you stack fans in series to increase the pressure capability?
I envision ten microprocessor fans in a stack and a funnel on the end.

Suggestions?
Thanks, mike

can't you run a hose to the garage?

I made a small shop air system from a fridge compressor and a empty fire
extinguisher.
The pressure switch was made from a pressure gauge, 2 light barrier
switches, and some clever transistor logic ;-). You see, "air on a budget".

Of course this is very low volume, and i only need it for a desolder gun.
I don't think it would be enough air for a air wand, for more than a few
seconds, anyway...

My gut feeling to the stacked fan thing is that ain't gonna work.

The air tools at ebay claim to have a diaphragm pump, but i somehow don't
see them having much volume.

you might look for a nebulizer pump square box thing i
see them at second hand stores few bucks beleave it or
not they are good pumps i mesured the out put at 40psi
i use one for my air brush

Sometimes there are lots of different kinds of pumps (and lots of other interesting stuff!) available for very low prices at:

Good luck.
