TurboCAD versions, review?

TurboCAD versions, review?

2002-05-02 by Steve Greenfield

I'm thinking of getting TurboCAD. I see that there are some on
eBay, from V6 to 7.

Is anyone here running earlier versions of TurboCAD, or better have
run earlier and the lastest? Opinions? IE, is it worth it in your
opinion to buy a full 6.5 Professional with book vs using the free
2D only downloadable V8 without book?

Steve,
I bought mine in the store for $30. If you want the scan of
the box let me know because there are several versions out there.
Mine came with a video tutorial. The free download one works just as
good. The online version has a bug in it. If you use snap grids and
you go out of the program and save it the drawing. The next time you
go in the program the first snap will be off a little. I would go
back in draw a line and then delete it. The next lines would ok after
that. I only use Turbocad for drawing PCBs so I am only using the X-Y
planes. The Z is set in the DXF to Gcode converter. There is also an
other program out there that Alan uses. I never mention it because
there is a guy floating around who steals a wrecks message threads
just to hawk his product! Everytime a friend of mine would start to
help someone learn to draw he would hijack the thread pushing his
product. He would get upset when you mention the Tutorial in Turbocad.
His product may be better but his attitude is not!

The freeware version works great for drawing pcb tool paths. You can
make your own component library and drag and drop the components just
like a pcb package. There is a lot of work to do connecting the
traces, but it works great fro 2D work.

I have also used the 2D version for some signmaking and name plates.
It works great.

Yes, please scan it. I'd like to know what version you are using,
there is the regular, Pro, and there's a sort of low end one that
pushes itself as "Learn TurboCAD". Features a 3D and 3 views of a
go-kart on the fold-out. I can get that one for something like $15
now at the half price books here.

I saw someone on one of the message boards pushing what turned out
to be a trojan horse program. He'd even hacked into the
messageboard itself and would taunt the owner of the board. Bad
mojo.

Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] TurboCAD versions, review?

2002-05-03 by Wolfgang Maier

Steve,

I must admit that I am a sucker for TurboCad. One of our Aussie mags
provided a cover CD with a free copy of TurboCad 6. Bangs for bucks this
CAD program is great. I have used AutoCad, AutoCad LT, Auto Sketch and I
must admit that TC is fantastic for people who do not need to use use CAD
every day.

Its got my vote.

Re: TurboCAD versions, review?

Hi Wolf,
I found out the DXF file that comes out of TCad worked with
all the programs I was testing. The other CAD programs had DXF
files that were glitchy. Several programs tell you to save the
file in ACAD14 format or something old like that. $30 and it
cought my eye in a regular store. It runs on computers that are
older than the requirements on the box. With Windows 95 it may not
install. The problem is the program install part of Win95. I found
you just click on one of the EXE on the TCad CD and it goes right in.

Also there is a copy of COREL Trace on the CD. It will turn
BMP files to DXF files. I did a Betty Boop picture with it. I
use the Boop Gcode for testing.
