What do the pro board houses use?

What do the pro board houses use?

2004-02-21 by ghidera2000

I'm actually having great success making double sided boards with 10
mil traces - haven't blown a board in a looong time. Its a fair bit
of work though and I'm starting to feel the need for >2 layers.

I have a couple items made up that I'm probably going to start
selling commercially soon and so I'm thinking of investing on
some "real" PCB making equipment. What kinds of things do the board
houses use for making these multi layer boards? I've done some
looking around the net but can only find stuff for hobby boards...

Any links or descriptions would be greatly appreciated!

You'll need to master PTH first, which isn't trivial. Board houses can take
some time to get it right.

You'll then need to sort out how you are going to register the layers and
get the right sort of press to laminate them.

As Leon pointed out you need to master through hole plating first.
Take a look at http://www.myhome.ch/mzingg/pcbstuff/tps to see my
homebrew trhouhg hole plating machine. I do multilayer boards on my
own, but I don't use prepregs to seperate the layers. In other words,
my method is absolutlely ok for prototyping stuff and boards for your
personal use. However, for a production run I always would have the
boards made in a board house.

The best way to get a feel for what equipment is used by the professionals
is to find a PCB fabricator who is willing to give you a quick tour around
the factory. As for reading , go to the library and find the Coombs',
"Printed Circuits Handbook".
I no of no web pages that would even come close to answering your question
as good as the above two recommendations would.

I have run on to no end of silicon chip fabrication
equipment on Ebay. I know that is not the same as PCB
but I think it would be a good idea for you to add
some Ebay searches to notify you of new plant.
