50 bits for $10.00

50 bits for $10.00

2004-01-30 by Dave Mucha

Hi all,

I was looking to purchase one of those boxes of resharpened bits.
The different places offer them as drill bits, but I was wondering if
anyone know if they alos include etching bits ?

I'm assuming not as it would make sense that production board houses
burn thru drills, but never etch.

But, was wondering if anyone else knows from first hand experiance.

Also, has anyone logged what size drills are supplied ? I'd hate to
find that 49 were 1/8 inch and one was 0.015"

I buy resharpened metric tungsten drills, but know exactly what I'm getting.
They are a lot more expensive than 20c each, though.

Helps to point out which box you're talking about. If you're thinking of the
red box from the tinker link I gave a while back the one I got was a fairly good
mix. But may as well look for the line with sizes, and get one each around the
.040 and .030 range, you'll use the heck out of those sizes and end up needing
them anyway so not much sense in not getting them all in one shipping.

Yup,

I should have mentioned Tinkers Emporium as a link to a supplier.

http://www.tinkers-emporium.com/newpage31.htm

$15.95 for 48 pieces

I was looking at HArbor Freight's 50 piece box.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=34640

$9.95 for 50 pieces

Not big difference in price for either supplier.

Looks like Tinkers Emporium offers more control over the drill bits
purchased, and HF offers a better price.

But, Mostly, I'm hoping for engraving cutters.

Hi All,

Just updating the old post.

I just received a box from HarborFreight and found 6 broken drill
bits.

One, 1/8 drill
Two -26 mil
one 29 mil
one 33 mil
one 43 mill

44 were under 20 mil

Seems the 'deal' was not such a good deal !

I buy mine from HF too, but I perfer to buy the 20 pack ($4.99 IIRC)
in person at my local store. Since they're in a (mostly) clear
package I can look through the pile and make sure I get somthing
usefull.

Based on new prices I figure if I can use about 1 in 20 it's a deal.
With care in selection, I seem to average about 5 in 20 usefull. It
is suprising how many realy tiny ones I get though. Since these
are "used" bits, sombody must have "used" them, but I can't imagine
what they use the #80 size for (about 13 thou).

I think they use them for vias, and those "only in one layer" vias.
(sorry i forgot the name)

I can buy them for about eur20/100 drills at ebay.
but there i can select the sizes, so you can use every drill bit.

Some of this companies, like HF, are not always really cheap in the end.

Re: 50 bits for $10.00

I found those in a seach, (keyword - DRILL) but there was a post from
someone who mentioned that they also got rasps aka routing bits, for
cutting out the boards and also Vee pointed engravers in the box.

Tinkers offers a better selection as they are not 90% tiny (less than
20 mil) but offer the ranges where one uses the drills for DIP's and
also screw terminals.

I'm kinda-sorta wondering if it was on this list.......

Toolsandtunes is his Ebay ID..

Yes it was on the list, someone else mentioned the points from somewhere else
though. The rotozip bits are really PCB rotary files. Also he has more set for
Monday ending, and they just went off this morning it'll be a few days before he
puts them back up for the other bits.

Also look for dremel and tool bits, I've ordered a few other packs with
points etc from various people on Ebay.

Its funny you post this as just today I received my drill bit order
from tinker's emporium. apparently they were on vacation all
february...

I haven't had a chance to use them but they seem to be fairly well
made bits with 1/8" shaft. If they are any good I'll order more as
they are pretty inexpensive.

They must be back now as I spoke to Ron on the phone tonite. (I think
I interupped his dinner)

Anyway, he has drills and is ready to ship.

I drilled a small board with the TE bits (65 holes). Overall, I like
these bits but I did break one (#62) after about 25 holes. I wasn't
putting any stress on it that I could tell. They seem to run pretty
true with no noticable wobble which is much better than my older
drill set. I may get some more.

Note that if the tunesandtools guy is still putting up bits for Monday end,
he had some sizes that were 50 of a single size for $5 to $10 depending on which
size, but not all sizes. But Ron also has size selections too, not only the
variety pack.

Just a few ideas to help you along on the drills. Note that most small bits
need high RPM for best operation, the small diameter means that the actual speed
of the outer metal against what it's cutting is relatively slow. 10K RPM isn't
crazy with smaller bits. Also note that your hand just isn't really steady
enough for much use with these. Even with a simple drill press, you need very
good and smooth depth feed, otherwise you'll tend to dig in and break bits much
more often. PCB is also quite inconsistent in composition, so even with my CNC
it still breaks bits more often than drilling in simpler solid objects. If you
hit a 'hard' patch in the board and the stress spikes up the bit breaks. Not
much getting around it, they simply break sometimes. With the CNC though I can
usually get hundreds or more holes per bit though.

And note that these bits usually cost $5 each new or so. At 20 cents each
they're quite the bargain, you can break 25 bits before you've caught up to the
price of one new one. And the new ones are just as easy to break too, unlikely
it would last longer than 2 or 3 of the others, so you're still way ahead overall.

Even if you don't build a full CNC, you should look at building a simple
slide with stepper motor to control the drill feed speed. That and aligning it
so the bit shaft goes perfectly into the hole that the tip cuts will make the
bits last much longer. They still eventually dull and grab and then snap
though, haven't gotten the stuff yet to resharpen them myself before they get
too dull.

And if you're using these by hand or most drill presses then guaranteed you
were flexing the bits. About the only way to even align my CNC accurately
enough is to drill with one of the #80 very thin bits, note which way it's
flexing as it drills, and then adjust until it stays straight as it drills. You
simply won't see the small amount you're flexing with a normal PCB hole size
bit, yet it's still flexing every time around. It may look straight to your
eye, but you're still flexing it. Eyeballing with hole bits just isn't good
enough to tell, that's why I sacrifice one of my thin ones when aligning things.

For reference I probably never got beyond 100 holes by hand even with
alignment helpers etc. With the CNC and stepper motor feed they go many
hundreds of holes, some probably 1000 or 1500. So you can bet it's your usage
not the bit that's the problem..

Alan
